Sarah (7800 KP) rated Aliens (1986) in Movies

Lives up to the original and more
Aliens is the perfect example of how to do a sequel properly. Not only does it match the excellence of the first Alien film, it almost surpasses it. There are some elements of claustrophobia and suspense, but this has now been paired with lots of action, and it works really well. The casting is great and the new characters are a welcome addition, and bring a lot of humour. The Xenomorph itself is still as terrifying as before, but with a whole new 'team' dynamic thrown in. James Cameron has done a fantastic job with this one.

Cameo appearances were awesome (1 more)
Acting from the leading ladies
Shouldn't be compared to the original (2 more)
Even this film was OTT
What was the point of Chris Hemsworth?
Nostalgic at the same time completely novel
It's like Bridesmaids mixed together with the original Ghostbusters. The wit and humour was completely innovative, not even comparable to the original which was excellent, however, the fact that the original four were super clumsy with their weapons was part of the charm - totally missed in this where they seem to be martial art masters after several attempts. The cameos were brilliant, only missing Harold Ramis. Enjoyable but not on the same level by far.

You will cry
"If you don't cry, then you are a psychopath" is what my girlfriend said to me before starting the film.
I don't think Emilia Clarke actually acted in this film, I think we see how funny and quirky she is in real life.
As with most British films we have plenty of humour, some drama and some sad bits and this film delivered on them all.
It is a great film, very well acted and shot in some stunning places.
I am not ashamed to say that I did cry at the end and challenge anyone to say they didn't after watching it.

The gore didn't seem right
Well hard to believe it's be 15 years since the first Hellboy, this reboot largely seems to have gone under the radar. I can see why.
Despite the big budget feel and huge amount of SFX it just feels like a very standard action film. Quite gory and with every fight accompanied by a thumping rock track. The plot is very by the numbers. It doesn't have the sense of humour of the earlier films. Overall an average action film nothing special but you might enjoy more if you are a fan of the other Hellboy films.

Kaz (232 KP) rated The Diving-bell and the Butterfly in Books

Being only 139 pages, this book may be short, but the impact it had, was enormous. This is an extraordinary memoir of a man who had a stroke and was left unable to move or talk. He dictated this novel to someone, using eye movements to indicate letters on an alphabetic board.
Whilst this book doesn't have a linear story as such, this is a beautifully written novel about the writer's day to day experiences in the hospital he is being treated in and, in the most mundane or saddest moments, there is humour and insight. This is a very interesting and poetic novel.
My Rating ****

Fargo for the 21st Century
Was expecting this to be the usual type of revenge thriller that neeson seems to do on a regular basis nowadays but this particular movie came with some very dark comedy moments that made it sort of feel like a fargo for the 21st century.
An ok film mostly but the story itself does tend to drift away from it's original opening event midway through the film and it seems the local cops are always 2 steps behind the villains.
The way the film let's the viewer know who was just killed off was pretty inventive i thought.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Thor: The Dark World (2013) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019
The departure of Kenneth Branagh and the subsequent trouble finding a director landed Thor: The Dark World in hot water before filming had even commenced. Helmed by Alan Taylor who went on to direct Terminator Genisys (oh dear), Thor: The Dark World is one of the weakest films in the entire MCU.
Plagued by a dull script and another phoned-in performance by Natalie Portman, it lacks the humour and sheer sense of madness that the god of thunder’s story requires. Christopher Eccleston also wins the prize for the MCU’s very worst villain – Malekith. May god help us all.

Dean (6927 KP) rated Wishmaster (1997) in Movies

Good Horror Premise
A fun idea for a new slasher premise, at least 3 sequels were made. The SFX do look a bit dated now and the gore effects, along with a lot of elements to the film do look a little low budget. With Wes Craven as exec producer and starring Robert Englund and cameos by Tony Todd and Kane Hodder adds a few nice touches for the horror fans. Andrew Divoff plays the evil Djinn very well and with a dark sense of humour. It is a bit cheesy but has a certain charm to it, one for gore fans and horror buffs will enjoy it more than most.

Not quite what I hoped
I have to start by saying Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds really does become his character. He is Deadpool there is no doubt about that, he is someone you can love and laugh at. I enjoyed this film, it did make me laugh, I probably would watch it again. But to me it didn't live up to the first one, the humour was still there but sometimes forced. A lot of action which was expected and I enjoyed being part of the X-Men universe. There isn't much bad I can say about it, just that I expected more after loving the first one so much.

Chris Pratt steals the show
I loved this! Just as much as I enjoyed the first one. Chris Pratt brings so much humour and "normalmess" to the film. Finding out more about his character and watching the developing relationships and new relationships form felt personal. It had such a feel good feeling surrounding it even when emotions were high. Of course it was action packed with a strong vast. I didn't think baby groot could have had a decent role with this film, but I was surprised and accepting of his role and appearance. I could watch this over and over.
I can't forget to add that the soundtrack is awesome!
