I don't know why more isn't being made of this show
(edit: I mean why it's not better known that it is, not that they aren't making more. Maybe they are, maybe they're not.)

This picks up from the end of season one of the show, with Dr Jack Dawkins (aka The Artful Dodger of the title) about to be hanged for a crime he didn't commit at the end of season one.

Spoiler alert: he isn't.

The main love-across-the-social-divide story of Jack and Lady Belle continues throughout this season, although more time here also seems to be given to who were, effectively, side characters in the first season: in particular, to Lady Belle's sister Fanny (who has perhaps the best arc of the season).

Alongside that, we have the continuing effort of Fagin to finagle his way to wealth and the exploration of the surgery of the time, with Dr Sneed coming more into his own and whilst a new detective in Port Victory is on the hunt for a serial killer who he believes to be Dr Dawkins ...

There are no two ways about this: I love fairytale retellings. I’ve yet to find one I don’t like (I’m also picky). Perhaps it’s because I like the firm sense of right and wrong with no nuance in-between? Or the fact that I immersed myself in myth, folklore and fairytale as I was growing up? Well, whatever the reason, it has stuck 🤷🏼‍♀️

What I really enjoyed about The Forest Grimm was its pastiche style: as Clara makes her way through the dangerous Grimm forest on the hunt for a magical book that has disappeared from her village (Sortes Fortunae, or the Book of Fortunes), she encounters characters out of fairytales who are as far from helpful as they can be!

These characters reminded me of the original Brothers Grimm fairytales: poisoning, maiming, murder all methods used by the fairytale characters. Clara and Axel (the boy she’s destined never to be with) stick together to survive and discover that perhaps fate isn’t necessarily set.

I really enjoyed this, and I have the second book all ready to listen to at some point, too!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

After the murder of her husband and the fall of his empire, a mermaid and her plague doctor companion escape into the wilderness. Deep in the woods, they stumble across a village where children hunt each other for sport, sacrificing one of their own at the behest of three surgeons they call "the saints." These saints play god with their magic, harvesting the best bits of the children for themselves and piecing the sacrifices back together again.

To save the children from their fates, the plague doctor must confront their past, and the mermaid must embrace the darkest parts of her true nature.

This was certainly not the story I’m used to reading when it comes to mermaids. This was fully of gore and dark meanings. Some parts are hard to read and not for the context but it’s like a full dictionary has been thrown in and it really put me off. Overall it’s a deeply dark fairytale of mermaids and death. For a small book it packs a punch in places.

They call it Moon-Night. The night when the moon rises high in the sky, fully visible for all to see, is the time Humans venture outside in hopes of catching a glimpse of Others for their personal entertainment—shifters transformed, strange dark creatures, all answering the call of the moon. Yvette is a vampire who works in a bar owned by a panther shifter called Raven. It is one of the few bars in their community in which Others and Humans can mingle. Restless shifters, blood lusting vampires, supercilious Humans … the night is filled with them. But what happens when the doors close tonight? What long-buried evil awaits Yvette? A dark force will awaken—one that will change her life, and those of the people around her. Forever.

This was one of the best novellas yet! It was fast paced and interesting we finally have some decent vampire action! But wtf was that ending 🙈 I now need to hunt down the next book set!
