The whisperer In Darkness
By H.P. Lovecraft

Once read a review will be written via Smashbomb and link posted in comments

The Whisperer in Darkness is a 26,000-word novella by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. Written February–September 1930, it was first published in Weird Tales, August 1931. Similar to The Colour Out of Space (1927), it is a blend of horror and science fiction. Although it makes numerous references to the Cthulhu Mythos, the story is not a central part of the mythos, but reflects a shift in Lovecraft's writing at this time towards science fiction. The story also introduces the Mi-go, an extraterrestrial race of fungoid creatures.

I really got into this story! He has a way of making you actually question whether there is life out there like that! Then you finish the book and realise it was just that a story! Told by a man with such an amazing imagination! I don’t know why I waited so long to read these!

African Dub All-Mighty - Chapter 3 by Joe Gibbs & The Professionals

"This album is a huge record for me. African Dub Chapter 3 is a record that's beautiful and a work of art that's ahead of its time. It still sounds so modern today in terms of production techniques and imagination. It has so much space, with the songs being really deconstructed. But they're reconstructions and deconstructions of commercial singles that had been made avant-garde by just adding certain parts and dub effects. When I first heard this at 16 or 17, what with there being no West Indian population in Glasgow and just hearing this record, I immediately loved it. African Dub Chapter 3 is a record that has stayed with me forever, y'know? So when it came to working with Andy Weatherall, who remixed 'I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have' and then did 'Loaded' after that, to me, that's like a rock version of dub. So I completely understood it. Meanwhile, there were those who never quite took to it as much as me because they didn't have that art rock/dub background."

Morgan Sheppard has once again created a place in which I'd love to exist.

Hiraeth has everything I need in the genre......dragons, books, gorgeous landscapes and a love interest 😉

I love that this is a 'clean' read, no uncomfortable descriptions of sex or violence. Well written as always, with history and legends woven all the way through......the kind that inspires your imagination.

For the second time I've been left wanting to work in or own my own book shop.....maybe one day.
The description of Wales, its beauty, traditions and lovely people really makes me want to go there and experience the country for myself.

Character wise, there's just the right amount of character depth, not so much that you drown in it but not so little that you can't imagine their personalities.
Hiraeth is for anyone who has a love of dragons, the outdoors and a belief in finding a place to belong. I would highly recommend for an afternoon read with a picnic and cheeky tipple 😉.

Threads (1984)
Threads (1984)
1984 | Documentary, Drama
Landmark BBC docu-drama depicting the effects on the UK of a nuclear war (implied to take place in 1988, not that it matters). A young couple plan to get married, not really paying much attention to the deteriorating international situation and rising tensions between the US and Soviet Union. And then events pass the point of no return and the world changes forever.

Not really something you watch to be entertained, Threads has lost very little of its power to appal and terrify. The first half, before the nuclear attack, has an almost kitchen-sink realism; the sense of foreboding is almost unbearable. Even the resources of the BBC can't quite bring the nightmarish aftermath to the screen in the same kind of the detail - or perhaps even the writer's imagination recoils from the sheer grimness of it all. Instead, Threads takes an almost impressionistic approach, providing snapshots of horror from the years following the collapse of civilisation. Distressingly convincing and powerful, and it still feels relevant; one would wish it were otherwise.

Classic of late Victorian horror-fantasy. A misguided scientist performs a surgical procedure on a young woman's brain which leads to her madness and death; but over the years that follow it becomes clear that he is also responsible for unleashing something much, much more disturbing.

It's slightly amusing to consider that this novella was criticised on first release for its decadence and sexual content - by modern standards it is, on the surface at least, very tame. But that's the nature of the beast in this case - this is a horror story where all the disturbing scenes happen off-stage, which is where the monster stays as well. Everything happens through implication, and is left somewhat to the reader's imagination, a trick which Machen pulls off rather more deftly than some writers who hailed him as an influence. I must be honest and say that the lack of a big reveal and a genuine climax wrong-footed me a bit, but the story is on the whole ingeniously structured and well-written, atmospheric and unsettling.
