The Marinated Meeple (1848 KP) rated Jurassic Park (1993) in Movies

The CGI (2 more)
The Special Effects
The Storytelling
The all time best dinosaur movie made so far....
This move is a great one and will hold up for many many years. They way the original king Kong holds up the groundbreaking special effects for the time are solid enough to fool people nowadays in a charming old fashioned way. Yes technology is evolving faster than dinosaurs ever did, but when something is made this well, it tends to age well, not poorly. Jaws is another example of aging well, yes we can see the flaws and the seems, but it doesn't matter. Yes I understand the science is flawed, but the premise is interesting, and the pseudo science is good enough to capture the imagination. And the imagination runs wild here like a T-Rex after a Jeep. It gobbled me up like a guy on a toilet. I still love to visit Isla Sorna. And plan to go back many many more times.
Fun Tidbit: All of the cast were given a Raptor model, signed by Steven Spielberg as a gift. It looked very frightening, and Ariana Richards has it in her house to shock anyone coming in, like a guard at the gate. Jeff Goldblum's model has a prime spot in his house and is a cherished object. Laura Dern put her Raptor model in her son's room near his crib. When he was older and saw it he screamed like never before. She had to put it in storage, but hopes one day, the two will be friends.

Rachel King (13 KP) rated Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in Books
Feb 11, 2019
I read this book very slowly through DailyLit, and even then I did not understand most of what I read or particularly enjoy it. When I read a book, I make a point of finding something to like about it, no matter how bad it is. I like chess, which plays a part in the book, but about the only thing that made sense in that context was Alice becoming a queen by getting to the end of the board. I know the text is a classic, but sometimes I don't care for a classic, and this is one of those times, unfortunately. While the book is chock full of great quotes, and an ideal book for a child to enjoy because of the imagination put into it, overall I'm not a fan.
graveyardgremlin (7194 KP) rated The Tale of Halcyon Crane in Books
Feb 15, 2019
THE TALE OF HALCYON CRANE is an interesting, easy Gothic read. It wasn't a book that held my interest in one sitting, but was enjoyable whenever I picked it up. A bit slow to start, it didn't really pick up until halfway, maybe two-thirds of the way through. The end was a bit anti-climatic but it fit the book, so that's fine. The author has a wonderful imagination and usually brought that through life, mainly through the island setting and the Hill history, which was enthralling. I loved the inclusion of two Alaskan Malamutes, which are one of my favorite dogs. So, if you like Gothics, and like a more modern setting with a heroine who isn't helpless, give it a go. It's a good book that's very easy to read.

When I read the description of this book I got really excited. It's Quantam Leap from my childhood 90's tv viewing! A person waking up in a different body each day and having to take on their role and decide how to live. Every day did have a similar element however 'A' as this person is called can access previous memories of these peoples lives in order to carry on their day as normal. I had a hard time connecting with the love story in this book as the girl was pretty young but overall I liked the logical thinking of 'A' and how 'A' lived this life. I did feel like had more questions than answers by the end however. I guess I'll leave my questions and answers up to my imagination.
Awix (3310 KP) rated Сталкер [Stalker] (1979) in Movies
Apr 27, 2019
Famously cryptic Russian existential SF classic, or possibly just three men wandering about on some waste ground for two and a half hours. A 'stalker' leads a writer and a scientist into a heavily guarded zone which contains a room that supposedly gives existence to the fondest desires of anyone entering it. They discuss philosophy. A lot.
Not quite as challengingly impenetrable as some of Tarkovsky's work, but still challengingly dense and subtle. Almost all the actual SF content is left to the imagination of the viewer; the film is primarily about discussions of virtue, faith, psychology, and many other abstract things. Mesmerising to watch, but quite hard work; there's a good chance it's every bit as good as everyone else says, but I'm just too thick to figure that out.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2204 KP) rated The King's Stilts in Books
Mar 9, 2018
King Britram has a difficult job keeping his kingdom from flooding, so he works all the time. The only break he takes is to walk on stilts, but one of his advisers doesn’t think that hobby is very kingly. What will happen when those stilts disappear?
This is a lesser known Dr. Seuss book, and that is a shame. It is definitely early Seuss with no rhymes and lots of words on each page, but older pre-schoolers who have the attention span for it will enjoy it because it contains the typical Seuss fun and imagination. Plus there’s a good moral in the story about balancing things in life.
