This is a short (50 odd pages) introduction and scene setting for the Divergent Omegaverse series. It tells of Lane and Derick, married for 40 years, and their plans for their future.
It packs a powerful punch though, even as short as it is.
Lane is an omega who has an inner animal but cannot shift and is deemed second class to those who can shift. Derick loved Lane from the very beginning and together they built a fashion empire, fully inclusive and non prejudiced. They had 3 sons and adopted 5 more, making a family of other divergents, cast aside by society.
Lane and Derick now plan to retire, and they gather those 8 sons to tell them the news. Suffice to say, it doesn't go down very well!
Steamy and punchy, I loved this very brief glimpse into Lane and Derick and look forward to seeing what those two men have in store for their sons.

I should say, I'm UK based, so the 1812 war between Canada and the US is not really one I know anything about. Therefore, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the details in this book.
What I can comment on, though, is the story between Zee and Jesse and their struggle to cope during this war. I loved them both, together and apart. They are both strong people, emotionally, do deal with such a difficult time, and to come out the other side.
It's beautifully written, from both Zee and Jesse's POV. There are wonderful descriptions of the scenery in that part of the world. I really enjoyed trying to picture them.
It has some lighter moments, but some darker ones too. There was much that made me cry.
I haven't read anything by this author before, A quick look shows her books seem to be about couples in settings with a war backdrop. I'd like to read more from this author.

Ursula has been in the care system, moving from one foster home and children’s home to another since she was 8 years old. We meet her as she starts her independent life in a halfway house, and a new job in an art school post room. She moves from the halfway house to a squat with a work colleague, and this is where it starts to get really uncomfortable. There’s a really menacing air to The Underwood, and that, along with Ursula’s traumatic childhood, really ramps up the tension.
In the present day, a documentary maker uncovers what she believes is the truth about that summer, and the adult Ursula, known as Uschi, realises that the past can never stay hidden.
I love a slow burn, and it really added to the menace and tension. There were some seriously scary elements, made worse by the fact that you never really see what you’re scared of (my favourite!). The contrast of Ursula’s friends home and The Underwood exacerbated the looming threat.
