Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette
Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette

Literally one of the best 90's albums there are
This is one of my soundtracks to the 1990s. From Ironic to Head Over Feet, every song is lyrically superb, and the music is essential for any avid listener of the indie rock genre. Alanis Morrisette is one of a kind and a pioneer at the same time, she's nonchalant and never played up to to the hypersexualisation of female artists. She's also witty and kick-ass so it's hardly surprising she played god in the cult film Dogma. Much love to this female idol.

Many intriguing storylines to follow
Plenty of accurate cultural and time period related storylines
Interesting and diverse characters
Rare gem
The movie revolves around one hotel room over the case of several decades, from its inaugural tenants, to a chilling scenario on New Year's Eve of the new millennium. A masterpiece from Canada which is a rare find but totally worth it.

Mellow Gold by Beck
Mellow Gold by Beck
1994 | Indie, Rock, Singer-Songwriter

"So he started off as an indie guy. 'Loser' was just a song he released on an indie label, but it caught fire. MTV picked it, blah blah blah. And it was later put on a proper album on Geffen. He is an eclectic artist and a Scientologist to boot. The irony is that Beck's father [David Campbell] actually arranged the symphony orchestra that backed us up at the Melbourne stadium when we played there. Mellow Gold has got this eclectic sense to it in terms of, like, he uses drum loops, which I hate, but it sounds cool to me! He uses different kinds of instruments and seems to play them all, and the songwriting is all over the place. But at the core of it, what he doesn't do that other singers do is show off. He just gets the personality going and sings the song. So when you think of Brian Johnson and Robert Plant and Paul Rodgers, they're showing off with their vocals, singing way up on the high end of their range. I don't care if it's Steven Tyler or anybody else, you show off! Beck doesn't show off. He's just midrange or low-down. His attitude comes not from what he does vocally but it's laid back, kind of matter-of-fact, as if he's just thinking to himself. It's a unique thing. In that way, even though it doesn't have a wall of guitars or any of that, it's very rock. That sensibility he's got, although I'm sure he would consider himself an indie artist, but his sensibility is very rock."

Grizfolk is an LA- & Nashville-based outfit with roots in Sweden. Not too long ago, they released a hearty indie-rock tune, entitled, “Hurricane”.

“Can we love like a hurricane? When the storm is here it’s hard to tame. Are we lost ‘cause we took it too far. If what it is isn’t all we are, shut the lights out, leave me in the dark. It wasn’t all supposed to fall apart.” – lyrics

‘Hurricane’ tells an interesting tale of a young guy who is head-over-heels in love with his significant other.

Apparently, he compares his stormy love for his partner to the nature of a hurricane, which means what he feels is very hard to tame.

‘Hurricane’ contains a relatable storyline and pleasing vocals. Also, the song possesses guitar-driven instrumentation flavored with a groovy indie-rock aroma.

“This song is about loving someone or something as hard and as fast as you can, like you’re eventually going to lose it” – Adam Roth

Grizfolk consists of Adam Roth, Sebastian Fritze, Fredrik Eriksson, and Bill Delia.

Their ‘Hurricane’ single will be featured on their upcoming sophomore album, entitled, “Rarest of Birds”, which will be released on July 19, 2019.

"Now that we're talking about it, I realise that a lot of these albums are trying to merge those two worlds: the classical or jazz aesthetic with the trashy, rock & roll, electric kind of thing. Obviously PJ Harvey would normally fall on that rock & roll/indie rock side of things but this album is different from all her other albums. It's a real step between those two worlds. It feels really ghostly. It's funny because I was obsessed with this album for a long time, and I didn't listen to it again for ages. Then I started listening to it again earlier this year and I've become obsessed with it again with the same intensity as before. It's just so incredibly evocative of colours and textures and sounds. It's just so delicate but heavy as well. She hasn't been explicit on the meanings of the song from this album but I know that the subject matter is extremely dark."
