Reiko LJ (126 KP) rated Ocean’s 8 (2018) in Movies

The Ocean's films are a solid fixture in the crime caper/heist genre. This genre is never about changing the world or making a big statement. It's here to entertain as people more interesting and skilled than you pull off something amazing. This entry delivers this easily, and with style.
The characters slotted in nicely together and everyone had their part to play with authenticity. Cate Blanchett's 'Lou' had a screen presence dripping with confidence and played off Bullock's 'Debbie' with ease. You don't have to watch the PR tour interviews to know the cast got along well, it shows through the film.
I feel like it lacked a certain something to really make it pop, major conflict perhaps? Even the obvious obstacle with the investigator proved to be little more than a speed bump. Or maybe that's the point? Maybe the whole statement is that a well planned heist with the right people means nothing does go wrong. Think on that.

David McK (3562 KP) rated The City of Shifting Waters (Valérian and Laureline, #1) in Books

Reading the interviews with the stars that came out at around about that time, I learnt that Valerian was actually a French comic, and that it had influenced elements of the really-rather-fun Bruce Willis flick 'The Fifth Element'. I caught Valerian when it showed up on Netflix and, while it was OK, it wasn't really anything special.
When I saw this comic given away as a freebie on Comixology, I thought I would give it a try: I don't know what I was expecting (something closer to the movie?), but this most definitely wasn't it!
This is set largely in the (then) future of the mid-80s, where the world is in ruins and New York is about to be swallowed by the ocean. Valerian and Laureline are both time-travelers, who must travel back to this period of their history: a period in which little is known about, a sort-of second Dark Ages.
This comic does show it's age, particularly in it's treatment of Laureline (who doesn't seem to really do all that much) and in Sun Rae: truth be told, it just never really gripped me at all.

Not only is the plotline great, the cast is phenomenal, the chemistry is there, but it moves, it takes you with them on the journey and you are never bored. The soundtrack for this film was perfect. It is everything you want from a movie like this and you can feel the love that Dax and Kristin have for each other through the screen. This film was released pre-marriage but when they were dating and I think it just shows. It doesn't feel forced, it doesn't feel fake or uncomfortable, it feels genuine and pure. Especially when you know them as a couple and listened to them talk in interviews and things, I think much more of their actual selves radiate through this film than most would think.
Bradley Cooper, Joy Bryant, and Kristin Chenoweth were the cherries on top of this film, but I think the real great character through this is Tom Arnold's Randy. He was just the true underdog of the film.
I would 1000% recommend this film. Watch!
