Kristy H (1252 KP) rated The Sun Down Motel in Books
Mar 19, 2020
I actually read Simone St. James’ incredibly spooky ghost story—set in a creepy motel—in a rather drab hotel room and boy did it scare me! The tag line: The secrets lurking in a rundown motel ensnare a young woman, just as they did her aunt thirty-five years before...
This was such a great book. It features a hard to put down mystery with excellent characters and some downright terrifying scenes! The book is packed with twists and turns, and it's absolutely captivating.
The parallelism between Viv’s story—set in the 1980s—and her niece, Carly’s, in present-day, is excellent. I was so attached to these tough women and their stories. The 1980s piece really grabbed me; St. James really captures the era so well.

Not your typical Wan

So I went see this , And with it being James Wan I expected a serious supernatural horror so, I started watching it with a mind set it might be a supernatural or entity type movie like the conjuring but I couldn’t of been more wrong. Its different in a good way its on the verge of silly but by damn he made it work. The visuals, the camera angles, the music, the gore its all one fun head fu**ed up ride! The special effects are crazy cool looking and the movie even gives you a hint of nostalgia to all those original horror movies. This movie is an unexpected mind blow I enjoyed every plot twist and hidden joke because there is some comedy in the mix or perhaps its just my dark sense of humor lol. Over all a good movie to watch a refreshing plot line to be honest. James Wan is a master at what he does and once again he delivered.
I came out thinking if this was the late 80s I would of just watched elm street about a serial kill that kills u in your sleep , which was also silly fun and scary. If you want something that pushes the boundaries then this is for you.

Will Skip and James Find the Key to Gold?
Skip More and James Lessor are about to get their second client for their PI business thanks to Skip’s girlfriend, Em. The client claims to be the great granddaughter of a man who was in possession of a shipment of gold in 1935 right before a hurricane slammed into the Florida Keys. In the resulting chaos, the gold was lost. Even if the client is telling the truth, can the duo find it? Oh, and there’s the small matter that the last PIs hired to find the gold vanished six months ago.
I’ve been determined to finish this series since it’s been on my radar for a while. Turns out, I really enjoyed this one. The plot isn’t a traditional mystery. While a couple of side stories could have been better developed, it all holds together well. I also appreciated that Skip and James weren’t as dumb and immature as the previous book. That’s still part of their characters, but it was more balanced with their deductions on this case. And I also liked Em’s dynamic with the two. Finally, the language was toned downs. If this holds true going forward, I’ll enjoy the rest of the series.

Spying, Even Accidentally, Can Be Deadly
When Skip Moore lands a sale for a company looking to upgrade their security system, he thinks he’s finally made the big time. He even gets his best friend, James Lessor, a job on the installation team. Then Skip is offered a couple of extra assignments with big paydays. What could possibly go wrong? A suspicious death for starters. Then there are things that aren’t adding up, and evidence that someone is spying on them. Can the pair figure out what is going on?
This series is a mixed bag for me, and this book was no exception. I appreciate the friendship between Skip and James, but the ideas and James leads them into make me smack my head sometimes. I appreciate some of the humor, but other bits make me cringe. The plot was compelling, but the ending was rushed. And a key scene makes little sense (why are the characters there?). Then there’s also the needless tease in the opening. Yet, I plan to keep going forward with this series. If you pick the book up, keep in mind that it came out in 2009, which explains some of the dated technology. If the premise sounds interesting pick up the series. Otherwise, you can skip them.

Lindsay (1812 KP) rated Leaving Everything Most Loved (Maisie Dobbs #10) in Books

Jacqueline Winspear is a new author to me. I so nice to find a new author I have not ever read or though try. Her book was refreshing and enjoyable to read.
It nice to see that a woman is a hero and having her own life and having a career she loves to do. Massie Dobbs loves to solve crimes and investigate around her home. She now struggles with if she should travel or stay.
She seems like she loves adventures and want to find out about herself. I loved the fact that you get to go on adventures with her. She one that will not give up on any crime or miss a boy. She will get to the bottom of the crime or murder if that the case.
She also struggles with her relationship with James. James seem ready to marry but is Massie? You will follow her and her trials to find out.

Cast (2 more)
Adaption to film
Music
Baker's father reduced role (1 more)
Missing songs
And Happy Ever After! (I wish)
Fans of the play will love this movie. They did a great job adapting this for a film.
The cast is especially amazing, esp Meryl Streep and my dream wife Anna Kendrick. However, while James um British talk show host that plays the Baker wasn't the worst choice, he kind of stuck out as mediocre compared to the other cast members. The singing from all cast members, James included, is all excellently done, all the actors performed their vocals live.
My only real beef with the movie is the complete removal of the narrator character and the missing song, "No More". While they also didnt include "Agony: Reprise," I liked the change they made to Rapunzel's story which would've recquired halfing the song or a complete rewrite. I'm good with that trade off. Plus I imagine the lyric "dwarves are very upsetting" might've proved for some to be indeed upsetting.

Great SFX (2 more)
Nice set up for next film
Great action sequences
Disappointing if no follow up (2 more)
Some dodgy characters
Weak love story line
Overall I really enjoyed this film. You can tell straight away that James Cameron had a massive effect on this film, even Alitas eyes look like something straight from Avatar.
The overall story was great and intriguing and most questions I had were answers, although not all but expect a second film would answer those.
If you can I highly recommend going to see this on the big screen as the visuals are beautiful.
