"It’s hard to think about literature and knitting without referencing Jane Austen. Sure knitting was a by-product of the time — a task to keep women’s idle hands busy while creating practical garments — but Jane Austen was never one to abide by traditional gender roles. The title character Emma is a self-assured, and self-sufficient young woman — an anomaly of the time. Prone to hubris, the only character Emma admires is the continually knitting Jane Fairfax."

Literary Gold
Jane Austen is a literary bad ass. I've read this book a hundred times and always find something new when I read it. Her knack for language nuances....unparalleled.

A wonderfully fun and witty comedy that was a joy to read and a fun book. Highly recommend it. A bit of a slow burn at first, but Jane Austen really knows her way around words.

A look at the social history around the time of Jane Austen. The book uses Austen's life and letters, but also diaries and letters of a group of other, non-famous people to illuminate different aspects of the period.

I was on a Jane Austen kick when this popped up on Net Galley. I was delightfully surprised that this novel wasn’t horrible. Jane Austen retellings/rip offs are a dime a dozen, especially modern versions. However, I felt that this was a lovely retelling. I felt is held true to its inspirations and I likes Evan and Darcy almost as much as Elizabeth and Darcy. The side characters were just as meddling and frustrating too!

Bottom line, if you want a cute modern retelling that doesn’t butcher the feel of the original, I highly recommend this novel.

The usual periodic melodrama
I struggled to get into this. There were moments where I understood why Jane Austen was hailed for addressing inequality between the sexes but it ended up being the usual story about love affairs in the middle and upper classes.

I had a hard time starting this. It reminded me of Jane Austen. Yes, I know that's the point but I would never have selected to read this if it wasn't a book club selection.

Again, this is another book that I'd rate a 3.5.
