Lumos (380 KP) rated The Cuckoo's Calling in Books
Jun 12, 2018
It was a real struggle for me to get through this book. I had a hard time connecting with the characters and envisioning what was happening. Normally, "British-isms" are 100% my thing but I feel like the references in this book were far too colloquial for me to find quaint. It took me almost twice as long to get through this book as it would have for another book of comparable size. I could feel the judgement from my friends when they asked what I was reading and I would respond.. yet again... that I was still reading Cuckoo's Calling. Even more judgement would come when someone would ask if I liked it and I would tell them that I was not enjoying it. "But why continue then?" ... It's what I do. I can't give up on books. Even if I am processing them at a snail's pace. Much less one written by JK Rowling. I knew there had to be a light in this book somewhere. That eventually instead of responding "nothing" when asked what is happening in the book so far, I'd be able to excitedly account all the details and events of the story. This did happen eventually... with the last 100 pages or so..
I think what I loved most about this book is that I was so torn over my opinion of each character. I wasn't a huge fan of Mare (the protagonist) which made me question her judgement. I've also read enough YA to pick up on some common tropes but this book literally had me guessing up until the last chapter. I can't remember the last time I read a book I was this conflicted on and I love that Aveyard's writing had this effect on me. Now excuse me while I go buy the next one ?

Mind games
Compelling Viewing
Shark Tank takes some of the richest entrepreneurs known and they sit in judgement over peoples business and product ideas.
Joe Bloggs from the street presents his idea in hope a shark will invest.
Some of the biggest products of the time got a big break on Shark Tank.
It is fiercely compelling to watch people sell their passion projects. Once you start you can’t stop. I binged three season on Netflix in a matter of weeks.

The game really makes you think before making decisions (1 more)
Able to 'save' the game and return to it
Dark game that makes you think as a team
After a lengthy set up, the game is quick to learn thanks to the rule book explaining each step to the players as you go. As a group, players really need to work together to avoid an early end to the game as one laps of judgement can result in total loss. Would recommend for a night with friends if you have a few hours spare

BookwormMama14 (18 KP) rated Goliath (Leviathan, #3) in Books
Jan 2, 2019
Goliath brought an epic conclusion to the Leviathan Trilogy. I read through this book quicker than the others (and that is saying a lot). As the crew of the Leviathan continue their mission, the action and adventure increases! Tensions rise as secrets long kept come into the light. Alek wants to do the right thing, but is his judgement clouded? If you are looking for something new to read, this trilogy is where it is at! Watching Alek and Deryn learn, grow and mature along this journey was a delight. This is a great story and one that I look forward to revisiting in the future.

Paranoia
One of Matt Haig's earlier books and I'm becoming a bit of a Haig disciple after reading a great number of them now.
The Possession of Mr Cave is the story of fatherhood lead by paranoia and is quite difficult to put down. Paranoia effects every decision and judgement from a father that loses one child and is desperate to preserve his other. Is he being possessed by his dead son or is he just losing his mind? Does desperation to be a great father cause you to be a great father or will it stifle life? You want to continue reading every page, just one more until its end. Another brilliant read!
