Haley Mathiot (9 KP) rated Spring for Susannah in Books
Apr 27, 2018
Okay. So. I got this in the mail and read it through completely the same day. That's got to be worth something.
I loved the premise of this book. It sounded so sweet, it sounded like it had a lot of potential. And I loved it: up until the halfway mark.
Halfway through, Susannah, seemingly out of nowhere, storms out of the house and tells her husband she's leaving. One minute she was fine, and she was beginning to love him, and the next minute, that horrible smelly house is just too much for her. It made no sense.
Also, their arguments were like that (what few of them they had.) on minute they were fine and the next minute they have a little bickering or frustration with each other, and he's like "if it's that bad for you, we'll get divorced." (not an exact quote, but it was something like that).
Then he left her. It was tolerable up until that point. But then he just snapped, and he left her. The locusts came back and he wouldn't listen to her, he just left and was like "I'll bring you home money because now I can't support you." He went all Edward Cullen on me just as I was really beginning to like him!
And then she found out she was pregnant.
And then he gets captured by Indians.
And then she thinks he's dead and two other guys say they'll marry her.
A little bit of plot overkill, maybe?
I was really disappointed. It would have been so much better if the conflicts were more realistic, and the plot consisted of less events that were more pointed towards the same thing.
Then there was her salvation. She wasn't really a christian before, and her faith didn't seem much improved by the end either. I was hoping for a heartbreaking realization or a sacrifice or a change, and all I saw was "huh I guess he's on to something, okay I'll pray too. God please give me back my husband."
Because of all that, near the end I found myself skimming and reading just the dialogue so I could get to the end. And the very end could have had so much more emotion, so much more response, but it just felt very dead.
I really wish I had loved this book because it sounded so adorable. If only it hadn't turned at that halfway point.

I have to admit, I am one of those people who doesn't really get why they are remaking animated Disney movies and not just...animating them again. Live action is fine, but animation, especially American animation, is just much more expressive. Mulan falls victim to this problem. If they didn't try to follow the original somewhat, it wouldn't be true to the source material & if they didn't try something new, it would just be a rehash. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed quite a bit of this movie, but the finished product didn't really feel like it had a purpose.
My biggest issue is that every new idea they added never felt like it went anywhere. "Here's another woman who is a powerful fighter like Mulan...oh wait she let's gone." "Mulan has a sister! She adds nothing to the plot." Nothing new is ever followed through in an interesting way and just seems half-heartedly thrown in. This basically just leaves the rehashed parts of Mulan which, outside of more serious fight scenes...isn't all that interesting
Is it worth watching once? Sure. Is it something worth watching over and over again like the original Mulan, or heck, even the straight to DVD sequel? Well, that's obviously up to you, but I likely won't be watching this again anytime soon.
Also, replacing hard-work, dedication, and a good old fashioned dose of pig-headedness with chi is a lazy way to try and separate a remake from it's source.

Caitlin Ann Cherniak (85 KP) rated Love, Nina: Despatches from Family Life in Books

Taken from my review on Goodreads: I enjoy reading my memoirs every once in a while because you have no idea what voices real people will have written on paper. The first half of the memoir actually had endearing moments, especially when it came to how Nina bonded with the boys she was watching while their mother worked. I enjoyed the boys' antics because at least this proves that they are real people. The second half of the book was a lot more boring, especially when it comes to Nina mocking lots of classic literature. Maybe I just didn't like Nina as a character in the memoir. She just seemed way too judgmental of everything even though she did love the boys she was caring for in the 80's. As much as I really wanted to like this book, I started to get bored to the point that I almost dropped it. In fact, I barely remember what happened towards the end because I just skimmed through my Kindle like a zombie. If you guys can survive through it, wonderful. It's just not exactly for me.

Veronica Pena (690 KP) rated As Good as It Gets (1997) in Movies

I have no idea what I just watched. Seriously, I feel like I wasted 2 hours of my life on a run around film that made literally no sense. Not only was Melvin just a horrible person, but he was also racist, and homophobic, and sexist, and THAT'S the ending they went with? I'm so confused.
You ever just watch those films and you get an eerie feeling because you know it didn't age well? This is one of those. I can't imagine it did that good when it came out, but now? Now it's just painful and bad. I'm so confused as to how this film has an 8. Someone, please explain where they saw an 8 in this movie. Did we watch the same one? God help me.
Also, Jack Nicholson looks like he could be Helen Hunt's dad. I have some questions for the casting director, the writers, the director, honestly the whole staff. Did they think this film was going to be good when they made it? The dog was the best part of the film. I feel like that's saying something.

Leah (: (569 KP) rated Love Me (Keatyn Chronicles book 4) in Books
Jul 26, 2018
Each book starts exactly where the last one finished, which is great as there is no need for a re cap and fits perfectly with the diary style of writing.
Keatyn is really staring to grow as a person and you can begin to see her as an adult not just a spoilt child like she appeared at first.
You will continue to be annoyed by the boys in Keatyn’s like as at times they all seem like idiots and that she shouldn’t chose them. Although I am 100% for Aiden.
