David McK (3673 KP) rated The Karate Kid (1984) in Movies

"Wax on ... wax off"
Classic 1980s family movie, that is almost like a toned down version of Rocky, and that sees Mr Miyaga train Daniel(san) after he moves to LA and becomes the victim of High school bullying by the local 'in' crowd who also train at the local Doyo whilst a young Elisabeth Shue provides the love interest.
And, I've only just recently found out, the superlative scene where a drunk Mr Miyaga recounts the death of his wife and unborn son in an internment camp was nearly left on the cutting room floor!!

What can I say about this film, it was pretty much what I expected. It's not scary or even that creepy compared to the other Conjuring universe films.
The best way I can describe this film. It's like when you go into a reptile house and see a display with an impressive name. You look closely trying to spot the animal. Then you realise the display is empty. That sums this film up.
It took 75 minutes to get going, problem is it's only about 95 minutes long. It's not as good as Creation.

Sara Cox (1845 KP) rated The Shape of Water in Books

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. Set in Sicily, there are a number of key players and just as many suspects. All the way through I was changing my mind as to who the killer could be. It is very well written. This is an Italian book that has been translated into English. It has a notes section in the back as there are some references that English readers may not understand and some humour is lost in translation (the chicken joke, for instance), this I think is invaluable for the reader in parts. If you like a mystery this is for you!

Charlotte (184 KP) rated The Assassin's Legacy (Minte and Magic Adventure #2) in Books
Dec 17, 2021 (Updated Dec 17, 2021)
Fun and engaging
Filled with fun, banter and cheeky assassins what's not to like?
The Assassin's Legacy is a good all around read. I love the different themes, monsters, family dynamics and folklore. Sasha is a charming man that just wants a peaceful life..... Don't we all? I really feel for him, trying to leave his past behind but being pulled back in and not in a good way!
A young adult plus read that will have you entertained from start to finish. Grab a cuppa, some biscuits and settle in for a cracking read.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Death Wish (2018) in Movies
Mar 16, 2018 (Updated Mar 16, 2018)
I haven't seen the original Death Wish film, so I'm just reviewing this as an Eli Roth directed movie with Bruce Willis in it. One, I was glad that there wasn't as much gore as I was expecting. I know Roth typically directs horror and torture porn, so I'm glad he showed restraint. It did take a bit to get going, but when it did, I was glad. It was interesting and was a really good idea to base it in the Chicago area, given it's like the wild west up there. The only real problem had was the pacing, and it did feel like a long hour and 47 minutes.
Katey Bassett (610 KP) rated milk and honey in Books
Dec 10, 2018
All in all, this was an easy read but I was hoping to feel more as I read it. I found I only really identified with a handful of the poems and felt like many of the shorter ones were there as page filler to make the book seem longer. I really enjoyed all the artwork, however, and I'll probably end up reading her next book to see how her writing has evolved. I just ended up feeling like this sort of fell short of the hype that was created around it, however, I understood why a lot of women could identify with the poems.
