WHOA! That was one heck of an epic tale. it was nice to see everything come full circle. A perfect bridge between films, it reveals small things relevant to the second film while hinting at the bigger picture. My one and only problem was the addition of the lesbian blacksmiths, they were just kind of there, like "Hey representation" and when I thought they were going to help resolve the conflict it was Olaf who helped instead.

Still, it was an immensely enjoyable book.

Dracula Untold came out around the same time that Game of Thrones was beginning to take off, which would explain why the whole film feels like a poor man's GoT and why it has half of it's cast involved. It only held my interest due to the subject matter of Dracula himself. Luke Evans is a decent enough lead, and this take on Dracula's origin story is engaging to a degree, but underneath the stylish vampire visuals, it's just another sword wielding war film.

"Like the Roth novel, this short story contains some of the most exquisite dialogue I've ever read. It's only four pages, covering about 45 minutes, as a couple waits for a train in Spain. You come to realize that they're talking about her having an abortion. Actually, they never speak about it overtly, but their story is just heartbreaking. Again, it's about people who are recognizing the distance between them. It's a very appealing story for an actor because drama exists in what's not spoken."

"At one point, I was transcribing Shattuck’s journals—I don’t know what happened with that, but as a result I feel connected to this book, which explores early 20th century Paris through the artists of the time, in a strangely personal way. Also, it’s about a writer looking at art, which is what I was doing with the 20th Century Art Book, so there’s a thread of what I like about it in the artist’s perception of art—just curating, showing, explaining, unpacking, translating from abstraction."

The Darkest Minds (2018)
The Darkest Minds (2018)
2018 | Sci-Fi, Thriller
The Darkest Minds seemed like it was going to have a good plot, but the execution wasn't great. The movie probably needed more time to be able to dive into details. It took the majority of the film's run time to get to their destination, and when they got there, things started happening, but then the movie just ended. It felt a bit inside-out, if that makes sense to you. It had good potential, but it ended up in a downward spiral, and couldn't save itself.
