The movie that all-but-sank Kevin Costner's career
In the early to mid 90s, Kevin Costner was riding high in Hollywood.

Then he had the one-two misfore of this (at one point, the most expensive flop ever made, I believe) and 'The Postman'.

Both are set in a post-apocalyptic future: here, one where the world has flooded 'due to the melting of the ice shelves' (don't even), with 'dry land' now virtually a myth and where gangs of bikers roam the outlands on custom-built vehicles in search of fuel ...

Sorry, sorry, that's Mad Max.

But you can definitely see the similarities: swap the bikers for jet ski's, replace the loner character played by Mel Gibson for one played by with Kevin Costner and you're virtually there!

Add a bit of Dennis Hopper to completely ham it up, a soupcon of mystery around The Mariner and his mutation, and a search for the mysterious Dryland and there you have it ...

Not as bad as it's made out to be, but nor is it brilliant by any stretch of the imagination

"...and why should they listen to you?" / "Because, unlike certain other Robins, I can speak with an English accent!"
Mel Brooks 1993 spoof, that takes aim primarily at the Kevin Costner 1991 'Prince of Thieves' version, with bits of the classic 1938 film thrown in as well as the Disney animated version.

Not as funny as I remember it being, unfortunately, with some questionable acting and the 4th wall breaking bits not really adding anything to the mix.

YMMV, of course!

A bit of a disappointment
Considering all of the other things Aaron Sorkin has been involved in, I was expecting big things from this and sadly it was a bit of a disappointment.

Jessica Chastain is great as expected, and Idris Elba and Kevin Costner do well too despite limited screentime. Costner even gets some of the funniest lines. The story itself is interesting, it just isn't well executed. It's far too long and gets very boring at times. I was expecting something very smart, stylish and witty but it isn't really any of those things. It tries hard with the wit and humour but really falls flat and doesn't live up to Sorkin's usual standard.

Also I have to say it, but was all the cleavage really necessary? That is the only reason my other half came to watch it with me, and he's openly admitted he'd have found it very dull otherwise...

The legend of Bonnie and Clyde is cemented in criminal folklore. The murderous couple were idolised by the public for their robin hood style capers. They left a trail of destruction during their crime spree that was eventually ended in a spectacular ambush.

That ambush was orchestrated by former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson), who were coaxed out of retirement by Texas Governor Miriam ‘Ma’ Ferguson (Kathy Bates) as the only ones capable of taking down the two outlaws.

The onscreen chemistry between Costner and Harrelson is great and the grumpy old men regail each other with tales of the past and how things have changed – not always for the better. It is this chemistry which holds the film together.

Their road trip takes them through quiet and sometimes picturesque Southern American landscapes and towns, as they retrace the bloodshed that Bonnie and Clyde leave behind. Bonnie (Emily Brobst) and Clyde (Edward Bossert) are seen but never heard and only glimpsed now and again, this subtle approach leaves the light to shine firmly on the long arm of the law.

The project itself was earmarked for a Paul Newman and Robert Redford pairing, something that I would have love to have seen given their previous work. As it was it fell to the hands of Costner and Harrelson who both do an admirable job.

Kevin Costner remains one of the most special actors Hollywood has produced. Based on a true story, a coach is tasked with taking a non existent cross country team from literally Zero to anything, and given little to work with.

After finding a student who can most definitely run, he learns that the boy has other family obligations that prevent him from participating with the team. Overcoming that, coach convinces friends of the boy to join the endeavor. What they are able to accomplish is truly motivating and inspiring.

I feel corny suggesting this, but I wish Disney would focus more resources on this type of movie. They never cease to satisfy in this arena.

3000 Miles to Graceland- is a good crime thriller. I know it got bad reviews, nominated for five different raspberries and laughable, but i liked it.

The plot: It's International Elvis Week in Las Vegas, where the strip is flooded by a sea of King wannabes decked out in jumpsuits and sideburns. But five of the impersonators swaggering into the Riviera Hotel are toting heavy weaponry in their guitar cases. It's the heist of a lifetime, orchestrated by ex-con Michael (Kurt Russell) and his cunning former cellmate, Murphy (Kevin Costner). The crooked Elvises steal away with $3.2 million, leaving the hotel in ruins and a high body count in their wake.

It has a good cast and intresting thriller.

"Shawshank, I guess, because of the quiet nature of the movie, the development of it. I’ve heard that it’s a movie that didn’t really catch the multitude of fanfare for a while. People didn’t catch on immediately. I got it immediately. I got the story, the narrative, and who can’t listen to Morgan Freeman narrate a movie all day long? Also, Tim Robbins killed it. Our very own William Sadler, of course, who has brought to us Tony Teresi, in terms of [Joseph Sikora’s] Tommy’s father in Power. Sadler was great in it. Clancy Brown, who was in The Guardian with me and Kevin Costner, one of my first castmates. The Guardian was probably my second big movie. So, I love Shawshank."

The Highwaymen is a recent Netflix movie about two ex Texas Rangers that were brought out of retirement to hunt and kill Bonnie & Clyde. With that premise and Kevin Costner & Woody Harrelson in the lead roles, this could have been incredible. Although the movie is very well made and the entire cast are all pretty great in it, it is just so damn slow.

Not only that but it is 2+ hours long and, my God do you feel it. Like me, you will most likely spend the whole time waiting for the film to pick up until it just sort of fizzles out. I get that they were going for realism over action here, but it is seriously slow. At what I thought was almost the end of the movie, I hit paused to go for a bathroom break, only to discover that I was just shy of halfway into the movie's runtime.

Don't get me wrong, Costner and Harrelson do a great job of carrying this movie and it really does rely on their performance. Also, the movie is technically proficient. The camera work, the lighting, the set design etc is all solid, this is by no means a poorly made movie.

Overall, if you are a huge fan of the Bonnie & Clyde story, or of either of the lead actors, then you should probably check this one out. If not, you can most certainly give it a skip. As I keep reiterating, this is a technically sound movie, it is just so slow and drawn out that it is detrimental to me recommending the film to anyone other than diehard fans of this story.

I've come here to help, help you decide what movie to watch this weekend. If there's two things I love it's family and good story telling, and you better saddle up and hold on tight for one thrilling ride of a family story in Let Him Go. I don't have to tell you how great Diane Lane and Kevin Costner are in it because they're always amazing, as is the supporting cast, but this the first movie I've seen from Writer/Director Thomas Bezucha and I'm now a fan. While technically listed as a 2020 release we know not much really got proper releases last year, and it's a shame this movie isn't getting proper promotion, but I'm calling this a 2021 release; my favorite of the year so far.
