Very underrated

So what kind of film do you get when you have great one liners, bar fights, guns, knives, egos, strippers, blues music, a polar bear and a monster truck? You get one of the most enjoyable and entertaining films of the late 80's, Road House. The film follows James Dalton (Patrick Swayze) a cooler (bouncer) and the best in the business, as he takes employment with Frank Tilghman (Kevin Tighe) the owner of the Double Deuce in Jasper, Missouri. The bar is the roughest in town and he needs Dalton to clean it up. However corrupt business man and crime boss Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara) stands in his way. After the classic "chick flick" Dirty Dancing, Patrick Swayze was Hollywood gold. Women loved him and men wanted to be him. The film was full of romance. Then along came Road House, a complete opposite to Dirty Dancing, a little romance and loads of action. The film has a great cast including Patrick Swayze, Kevin Tighe, Ben Gazzara, Kelly Lynch, Marshall R. Teague, Red West, Kathleen Wilhoite, John William Young, John Doe, Kurt James Stefka, Keith David & Terry Funk. The cast works well together and it is full of great performances. Naturally Patrick Swayze at the height of his career stands miles apart from the rest of the cast as Dalton. A character that can hurt you with his words just as much as his fists. Tragically, 20 years later Swayze had his life cut short by cancer. His death is still a major loss to the entertainment industry, but his legacy will live on in the great performances and memorable characters he played. The film also a features a great performance by the late great blues guitarist Jeff Healey as Cody. It's the music in the film that goes a long way to achieving the right feel for the film. Everything works well from the characters, the music to the setting. Set in a rural area the scenery is breath-taking and it is used to great effect. But it's the fight choreography that stands out from many other films. Great bar fights are pretty much a thing of the past, but here they are full of action and humour just like the classic westerns. The one on one fights are brutal, mainly for the realism they portray. The script is awesome and full of classic lines mainly from Dalton and although many are cheesy, when he says it, it feels right. The director surprisingly hasn't made many films but the ones I have seen of his I really like and I know I am in the minority. See my review of Gladiator (1992) for more by this director. This is truly a great film, although very underrated. It is also one of my personal all-time favourites. There are a couple of versions of this so ensure that you see the USA or UK version released after 2002 as these are the uncut editions. So grab a few beers and a few friends, but this on a big screen and turn the sound way up for a really great movie experience.

A Jolly Good Time
A member of my family mentioned when discussing the 1988 John Cleese comedy A FISH CALLED WANDA that you can tell much about a person over what part of this film that you like the most. Do you like:
a). The John Cleese/Jamie Lee Curtis love story
b). The "caper"
c). The beleaguered, unsuccessful hit-man Ken
d). The old lady and her 3 dogs
e). Kevin Kline as Otto
For me, that's easy - ALL OF IT! I find that A FISH CALLED WANDA is a very funny, richly acted comedy/caper that brings forth 4 characters that are easy to spend 2 hours with. Starting with John Cleese as Barrister Archie Leach. Cleese conceived, wrote, starred-in and (at times) directed this film and his "British humor" (honed from years as a member of the MONTY PYTHON comedy troupe) is in full force here. He has a reserved appearance about him that covers a wild man underneath yearning to break free.
Jamie Lee Curtis is quite good as the center of the film, Wanda Gershwitz, a cunning conman who will stop at nothing - and step over everyone - to get what she wants. I find that Curtis is under-rated as an actress and a comedienne and this picture shows that she can hold her own against 3 comedy greats at the top of their game.
The 2nd member of the Monty Python troupe to appear in this film is the remarkable Michael Palin as hapless hit-man, Ken. He becomes increasingly frustrated and frantic -and increasingly funny - as he attempts to complete his assignment throughout the course of this film.
But...the real star of this film...and the actor/character that steals the film away from everyone else...is Kevin Kline's Oscar winning performance as Otto, Wanda's erstwhile love who has a very high opinion of himself. It is rare that a comedic performance wins an Oscar - Kline's win is the the last one to do so - but it is easy to see why the Academy decided to reward Kline for it is a committed performance that is wild, wacky and over-the-top, but not overtly so. Kline has been very good in many other pictures/performances before and after this film, but he never reached the height that he reached in this film.
The film has veteran director Charles Crichton listed as Director with Cleese listed as co-Director (though Cleese insisted that Crichton did all the work and he only put his name on it to assuage the fears of studio executives over Crichton's advanced age). Well...Crichton does a wonderful job of letting the lunacy explode on the scene while keeping a lid on it and moving the action along at a brisk pace.
Wanda is one of those films that people remember fondly, but do not revisit. I would highly recommend you do, it's a jolly good time.

Sledgehammer Games have crafted a gem in the latest chapter in the mega-selling Cal of Duty series. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare blends old and new to create the most enjoyable and versatile entry into the series in recent years.
The game is set in the near future where Exo Skeletons, drones, and target seeking grenades have become commonplace on the battlefield.
Players are cast as a young Marine who after a successful but costly battle finds himself at a crossroads. He is given a new chance when the head of a large and powerful private defense contractor offers to make him part of the team.
At this point players will take on a deadly terror threat all over the globe and will have an arsenal of weapons at their disposal including hover bikes for a thrilling chase through Detroit.
Of course there is a darker side to the story and a bigger plot is discovered where the player must stand up for what he knows is right even if it means turning his back on others.
The graphics of the game are first rate and the facial animations have to be seen to be believed. I enjoyed the new weapons and storylines, but much of the gameplay while exciting does follow the series staples of run and gun, stealth missions, and vehicle chases.
The addition of the Exo Suit is a huge plus as it allows for jet powered jumps and moves as well as the ability to cling to metallic surfaces.
This feature enhances the storylines greatly as I enjoyed jumping to and from moving vehicles, climbing up vast buildings, and making tall jumps in combat.
What really makes this game shine is the amazing multiplay which not only combines multiple modes such as Kill Confirmed, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and countless other modes, it also has co-op missions as well.
The ease of customization in the multiplay modes is great as everything from energy weapons to machine guns is available to players as is the ability to customize your perks, kill streak rewards, and accessories.
The game offers bonus items that can be accessed in menu and in game which really enhances the appeal of the game. I remember turning a solar lense on some enemies and frying them down as well as getting a giant combat suit and cutting players down to size.
I had issues with the multiplayer in Ghosts and had to force myself to play to make max level, but thankfully Advanced has not had those issues as I happily play the online modes as often as I can. I have enjoyed the maps and the variety of weapons and combat styles immensely.
The inclusion of Kevin Spacey was a nice addition as far as I was concerned as it brought a new level of menace and complexity to what could have otherwise been a stock video bad guy. You can almost understand his motivations.
I was able to complete the single player campaign in a bit over 6 hours but I enjoyed the thrill ride it contained and being able to use the abilities of the suit as well as the grapple were well featured throughout the highly detailed levels of the game.
In the end if you like Call of Duty then you will likely love this game and if you are not a fan, then no matter what the publisher and designers do will likely not appease you. For me, this was a nice mix of the old and familiar with some new directions that shows there is still plenty of life in the franchise.

I received this book for a free and honest review. Upon receiving this book I was excited to read the story because of the hype it had received. While this book received a lot of hype and I was excited to read it. There are obvious flaws in the plot, but beyond that the story jumps around and at times it was difficult to follow. When it comes down to it, I did enjoy the story and learning about very serious issues that effect people who live in Kentucky.
This is a coming-of-age story that takes the readers to the Kentucky mountains. Within the story the readers are able to see how beautiful the nature is and how delicate it can be. Throughout the story the readers learn about real and serious issues such as coal mining, poverty, and homophobia. The issues are not laughed or portrayed in a joking manner but in a very real, and honest way and bring the issues to life.
There are three main characters; Kevin, Pops, and Buzzy. The characters have flaws, just as people, which makes the characters likable, realistic, and approachable. By having the characters realistic readers are able to identify with the character. Obviously there are more than just 3 characters in the story. These characters that support the main characters bring a complexity to the story. As a reader you will want to learn more about the supporting characters, which brings that mystery aspect to the story.
The ending of the story was done in a way that felt predictable but did give the story closure.
While I neither enjoyed nor disliked this story I believe it is a worthwhile read. Readers are able to learn some valuable lessons and about some serious issues that still effect people from Kentucky of today. So, for this reason I recommend this book.

Perfect... for kids
The trailer for this didn't fill me with much confidence, and I was even more concerned after hearing about the troubles even getting it to the screen, and I'm afraid to say it lived up to my rather low expectations.
Right from the opening scene, its obvious this film has been made solely for children. The plot is basic and predictable and a lot of the action and gags are very childish and puerile. Even Emma Thompson's narration made me feel like I was watching a kids educational show. I appreciate it's difficult to make a film suitable for kids and adults alike, but Disney and Pixar have proved it's possible without being infantile - sadly Dolittle doesn't. There are a few moments that I did have a small giggle at, but most of the gags I found either too obvious or childish to be funny. Weirdly enough I found Kevin the squirrel and his logs hilarious.
The cast themselves I found underused, or rather odd choices - some of the voice actors of the animals to me seemed a little out of place. That probably wasn't helped by how distractingly odd the animals looked when they were talking, and with the CGI ranging from pretty good to decidedly dodgy. Antonio Banderas was wasted as King Rassouli and Michael Sheen was hamming it up to the extremes, but it's Robert Downey Jnr that deserves a notable mention... for how terrible his accent is. I love RDJ, but his Welsh accent ranges from ok to downright horrendous. I couldn't even tell from the trailer what sort of accent he was doing it was that bad. And the problem with this is the accent took away all of the fun and charisma you'd expect from his performance.
The one benefit of this film is that it's fairly short, so it doesnt drag too much. Your kids will love it, but as an adult I wouldn't expect much.

Never Hike Alone is a hell of an accomplishment - a fan made film based on Friday the 13th that is as good, maybe even better, than the best entries in the main franchise.
It's premise is simple - a survival/hiking enthusiast is collecting footage for his YouTube channel when he accidentally stumbles across the remains of Camp Crystal Lake, resulting in a one on one fight for his life when he discovers that Jason Voorhees still resides there - and it's short runtime (clocking in at just under an hour) make for a no-filler, sharp-shock slice of slasher goodness.
It carries a lot of tension, the first half being relatively calm as protagonist Kyle (Drew Leighty) explores the remnant of the camp. Fans of the original film will surely get a kick out of recognisable landmarks, including the bed that Kevin Bacon was skewered through. It's a nice way of showing that this short is a true love letter to the franchise. Kyle is a likable and believable lead who's survival skill set makes him a good match for the big bad.
When Jason eventually shows up, he's damn scary! This version of Jason is just relentless. He's quick, heavy footed, and smashes through doors like they're not even there. Director Vincent DiSanti fills the shoes of Jason, and his tall and broad figure make for a genuinely intimidating version of this beloved horror icon.
He looks fantastic as well, it's clear that a lot of effort was put into his make up and costume.
Top all of this off with a cameo from Thom Mathews himself, and what you get is a recipe for a successful short film, made for fans, by fans.
Never Hike Alone is a real treat for anyone who even has a passing interest in Friday the 13th. Hats off to Womp Stomp Films for their great work.
