Dream but Enjoy the Present
Katy is a caboose, but she doesn’t like traveling at all. She longs for peace and quiet and a stationary life. Then she is presented with the joys of her current life. Will she realize her dream? Will she enjoy life until then?

I hadn’t read this picture book for years until I picked it up recently, and I was immediately struck by the moral of the story. It’s complex, about enjoying your life while you dream of something else, so kids might not fully grasp it, but that doesn’t make it any less good. Of course, kids are mostly going to be interested in the story and pictures. As with all Bill Peet’s books, the pictures are detailed and colorful. The story, told in rhyme, will keep kids’ attention as well although the vocabulary might be a bit too complex for those just learning to read to read on their own.

"This one is on the list for nostalgic reasons, plain and simple. I saw it on TV as a child (on my mom’s recommendation, if memory serves) and knew I was watching something completely different than the rest of the brainless fare to which most kids are exposed. One vivid memory I have is of being scared by the film, but in that really great way kids are scared by things like the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz or the Pleasure Island sequence in Pinocchio. Though I’m sure I saw it in a pan-and-scan version, I was struck by the vivid colors of the film, and the scenes with little to no dialogue must have been as foreign to me as the beginning of Wall-E was for most kids this past summer. I’ve seen it a couple of times as an adult, and thankfully it stands up very nicely."

So a father leaves his kids-with a woman he's planning to marry- for a few days in a remote cabin. Just when his kids need him most(because their mother killed herself in the beginning) and goes off to work(at Christmas time). Somehow, he has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA idea just how mentally damaged/unstable she is. This movie eas a slow, tedious, mind-numbing burn that just fizzles out in the end(horrible ending). The acting was decent and the cinematography was too. It had creep factor, I'll give it that, but the story was just... sad. These kids go through hell through pretty much the entire film because of this psychotic ex-cultist and it ends up being their last days. You genuinely feel bad for them, but overall this was just a weird movie strangely pieced together that built up to....nothing. Her craziness wins out. NOT worth a watch.
