Dean (6927 KP) rated Maniac (2013) in Movies
Feb 7, 2018 (Updated Feb 7, 2018)
Elijah Wood (1 more)
Cinematography
Artistic Slasher
A very stylish Slasher film that is very different to the norm. I'm not sure if this was a remake of the old Slasher film or not? What makes this stand out is a great performance from Elijah Wood. It's also quite shocking rather than a tongue in cheek horror as most Slasher films fall into. Also the fact the view point of the majority of the film is through the eyes of the killer. Something better and varied to most horror films.

Bee (0 KP) rated Lady Midnight in Books
Jan 29, 2018
Wow, what can I say? I thoroughly enjoyed reading Lady Midnight. I felt for all of the characters, I had favorites who turned into less desirable characters towards the end. I thought I'd predicted who the killer was and then a sense of dread and realisation and I found myself flicking back to earlier parts of the story to cement what I now knew was true before Emma pieced it together herself. I can't wait to read the next installment! I'm especially looking forward to seeing how Kit and Ty interact with each other.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated Dead Man's Island (Henrie O, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Henrie O gets a call from her old lover that he needs help, so she flies to his island. Once there, she learns he fears for his life, and sure enough he is murdered during a storm. Trapped on the island with a killer, can Henrie figure out who done it? A good puzzler that would make Christie proud. My only complaint was the ending was rushed, and the book deserved better.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated The Homicide Hustle: A Ballroom Dance Mystery in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The reality TV competition Ballroom with the B-Listers has hit DC, and Graysin Motion is one of the featured studios. But when one of the show's producers dies, Stacy begins digging around to find the killer. The characters and plot are a little light even for a cozy, but the story comes together well at the end. Anyone with an interest in ballroom dance will certainly enjoy it.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated Tell No Lies in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Daniel Brasher is winding down his job as a therapist to released criminals when he starts getting death threats in his inner office main - death threats aimed at other people. Can he figure out what is happening before the killer turns to him?
This author always creates great plots and outstanding characters and pull you in, and this book is no exception. It's another amazing thrill ride from start to finish.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
When Mel is accused of murdering her best friend's fiancee, she has to set down her cupcake tins and start sleuthing to find the killer.
I've heard such praise for this series, and I didn't feel the debut quite lived up to the promise. However, I did find the plot good and the characters real. I enjoyed the book enough that I will continue on with the second in the series.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated Cinnamon Roll Murder (Hannah Swensen, #15) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
When the piano player of a jazz band is killed, Hannah springs into action to find his killer. Meanwhile, she's also looking for a way to stop Hannah from marrying Dr. Bev. The characters were great as always, and the mystery was fun. But the Norman/Dr. Bev story was unrealistic. I'm hoping, however, that it is leading to the end of the Hannah/Norman/Mike love triangle.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated Pampered to Death (A Jaine Austen Mystery, #10) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Jaine Austen is off to a spa thanks to neighbor Lance. Only when she gets there, she learns it's really a fat farm. When another of the guests gets murdered just before Jaine is going to escape, she decides to find the killer so she can grab some real food. This is another funny adventure for Jaine, and I laughed my way through it from start to finish.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated Mistletoe Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Lucy Stone is working nights at a mail order company. When the owner is killed in the parking lot, she begins to piece together gossip to find the killer. I like the characters, but the plot was slowed down so much in the first half by every day life (Lucy is a married mother of two), that I was bored. Things did pick up in the second half.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2352 KP) rated Naked Heat (Nikki Heat, #2) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Gossip columnist Cassidy Towne has been murdered, and Nikki Heat must solve this high profile case quickly. To make this worse, writer Jameson Rook was profiling Cassidy, so Nikki must reunite with Rook to try to find the killer. Lots of great action and plenty of fun for fans of the TV show Castle. The writing was definitely better this time around, too, although it still could have smoothed out in a few spots.
