Is There Danger in the Neighborhood?
Martha Rose’s efforts on her first granddaughter’s quilt is interrupted by her neighbor Sonia’s new foster daughter, Poppy. Poppy thinks something is wrong with Sonia, and Martha quickly confirms it. While Sonia recovers in the hospital, Martha gets to know Poppy better, and learns that Poppy’s parents were both killed a few months ago and the killer hasn’t been caught. Martha tries to get someone from Poppy’s family to give her a permanent home, but she also begins to wonder if Poppy knows more about her parents’ death than she realizes. Might she be in danger?

This is a unique premise for a mystery, and I enjoyed seeing how it unfolded. There was plenty going on here, and it kept me engaged the entire way through. Unfortunately, there is a pretty big why that is never explained, and another aspect of the ending felt a little needlessly harsh to me. It was great to see all the characters again and find out exactly what is going on with them, and the new characters were interesting as well. Fans new and old will be kept turning pages with delight until they reach the end.

A definite 5 star read for me and one of my books of 2023 so far ... an absolute cracker!!

I read a lot of crime and psychological thrillers and the odd horror book and it takes a lot to get me going but Sam Holland most definitely got me going with The Twenty. Oh my word!! Why? I hear you ask.

Excellent and interesting characters ... check.
Excellent serial killer ... check.
Gripping story line ... check.
Fast pace ... check.
Twists and turns ... check.
Gruesome scenes that give you the chills ... check.
Tension and suspense in spades ... check.

What more is there to be said? Oh yes, this might be book 2 but don't let that put you off, it can easily be read as a standalone but I would strongly suggest you read book 1, The Echo Man, it's also a cracker!!

Highly recommended to those of you who enjoy a dark, gritty and grisly crime thriller ... you won't go far wrong with Sam Holland and I must thank HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of the brilliant The Twenty.

I can't wait to see what comes next.

Hunting a Killer on Vacation
Jessica Fletcher has just sent her latest manuscript to her publisher, so she is happy she gets to spend some time with her nephew, Grady, his wife, Donna, and their son. They are staying in a cottage right on the beach for a month thanks to Donna’s job. However, Jessica’s first morning there, Donna finds the body of her boss on a private tennis court. Jessica doesn’t want to get involved, but she can’t stop asking questions. Will she figure out what happened?

Grady and Donna (after Grady met her) were some of my favorite supporting characters on Murder, She Wrote, so I was pleased with how they were captured here. I could easily hear the actors in my head, and I loved spending time with them. Sadly, the rest of the characters were a little weak with only one or two defining characteristics. Meanwhile, the plot wandered some with a slow start and a bit too much vacation time. That’s not to say it didn’t have a couple of good twists and a nice resolution. Ultimately, fans of the series will enjoy getting to spend time with favorite characters again.
