Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion
Book
In a divided world, empathy is not the solution, it is the problem; a source of prejudice, not...
This is the true story about nine young women brought together under the most heinous of situations but who, together, show the power of friendship amongst the shadow of human depravity and the light of the kindness of strangers.
The book follows each of the nine before, during and after the WWII and whilst this ensured a complete picture was formed it did jump a bit between different times, people and different places which made it difficult to follow and, I think, detracted from the flow somewhat. Despite this, I got a real sense of the personalities and characters of each of the women and it was really interesting to read about the plight of political prisoners and captured resistance fighters during this time period.
By the very nature of this book and it's subject matter, it is not an easy read however the resilience, bravery and courage of these young women deserves to be told and should be told. I also feel that, done sensitively, this could work well on the big screen which would bring this amazing story to the masses.

Lindsay (1779 KP) rated Chipper Makes Merry in Books

The pictures are well done. I love the way Chipper is determined. But will he be successful? Will he have to help his friends out even when they're a few mess-ups along the way. Will Chipper get these two friends to help out and maybe cheer up Moose?
This book deals with kindness and determination. Children will want to read this book year-round. However, it remains set during the cold winter season. Chipper's plan does ruin, or will he find a way to be successful in making things, Merry.
Children will want to cheer on this little friendly fox. They will laugh and encourage their little furry friend with his little surprises when he tries and leaves them for this friend. Will it work? Children will enjoy the fun of this book. This phase is said repeatedly throughout the book "Tip Toe, Tip Toe, Crackle, Crunch!" I wonder how it all ends up for Chipper and his furry friends?

Sam (74 KP) rated One Hundred Names in Books

I loved Kitty so, so much. She’s a character whose life has been ruined by her mistakes but she still won’t let it completely take over her life. True, what she did wasn’t right when she didn’t collect all of the facts before outing a man. However, this sort of mistake could have ruined her career. But she uses the death of her best friend to fuel her to succeed and move on from her past. Her ability to eventually laugh with others over what happened is admirable, and what makes her such a brilliant character.
I also love the realism here. Kitty has her flaws and has made her mistakes, but so has every single other character in the novel. Everyone has their flaws and nothing is sugar-coated, giving a really strong realistic image.
There were a few moments when Kitty’s decisions annoyed me slightly, mainly later on in the novel where there is one occasion where she is quite spiteful, but in the end it all turns around and her spiteful decision actually helps the person she has a grudge against. I love that this spreads the message of sharing kindness instead of hatred.
MaryAnn (14 KP) rated Fruit Flies in Our Faith: Nurturing and Sharing the Fruit of the Spirit in Books
Nov 4, 2019
What happens when we let the Fruit of the Spiritlove, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) sit unused? Spiritual Fruit Flies! The Fruit of the Spirit never goes bad but spiritual fruit flies, like worry, temptations, impatience, bad habits, etc. distract us from living out the Spirits fruit in our lives.
In Fruit Flies in Our Faith you will learn to:
Listen to the Spirit and begin to recognize the spiritual fruit flies buzzing around you.
Rely on the Spirit to begin to make realistic changes to exterminate those pesky fruit flies.
Experience the wonder of the Spirits fruit growing and ripening in your life.
Share the Spirits delicious fruit with the world around you.
Focus on what the Spirit is teaching you through your own experiences and stories.
My Thoughts: We certainly know what happens when we don't use fruit, it rots! God has given us fruit to use and use it we must. In this book, the reader will learn to recognize their fruit and to learn to use it before it stagnates.
With lots of good teaching and encouragement, the reader will learn to grow and develop their fruits.
Truly encouraging and inspiring!
