Continues the gripping Warlord Chronicles trilogy (1 more)
Great characters, compelling story.
See my review for the first book in the trilogy – The Winter King. If you’ve read that, I’m positive that you won’t need much convincing about this part – I will reassure you though – it’s just as good and gripping.
Enemy of God continues to tell the story of Arthur begun in The Winter King, showing Arthur’s efforts to unite the Britons against the Saxon invaders. Derfel’s tale continues and he becomes a champion of Arthur’s, finds love and embarks on a perilous quest to recover an ancient British treasure. There’s a lot of darkness and conspiracy thrown in too.
As a Lord of the Rings fan, this is my next favourite ‘fantasy’ trilogy. If you liked ‘The Vikings’ or ‘The Last Kingdoms’ series on TV, I would highly recommend that you give this trilogy a read – starting with The Winter King.

Taron Egerton has made quite a name for himself as the plucky Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise, but this revamp of the Robin Hood story is an absolute turd of a film. After last year’s lifeless King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, the writing really was on the wall for this overblown adventure that spectacularly achieves nothing in its running time. Can you get a refund at the cinema?

David McK (3425 KP) rated Aquaman (2018) in Movies
Jan 20, 2019 (Updated Jul 20, 2024)
Well, that was .. colourful.
Aquaman, as a character, is one that I'm not really that familiar with, only really coming onto my radar as a result of the 2017 movie Justice League.
Here, Jason Momoa reprises his role from that movie as the titular Arthur Curry aka Aquaman of the title, who finds himself caught in the middle of a brewing war between the Atlanteans and the (unsuspecting) human world.
Far removed from the early (somewhat dour) first movies in DCs Extended Universe - at one stage, an octopus plays a drum (I kid you not) - this is big, bold and colourful, with Arthur on a - literal - quest to recover a trident belonging to the first King of Atlantis that will grant him the powers to avert this war.

Finally a decent guy Ritchie movie I actually liked after king Arthur and aladdin which I haven't seen. Back to download Ng the kinda movie which he's famous for eastend gangster type of movie. Acting excellent plenty of swearing which would make you're mother blush. For me the standout acting goes to high Grant playing against type not his usual and it works. Probably the ne of my favourite movies of the year so far

King Arthur is destined to return and Tom is destined to wake him.
When the Lady of the Lake summons Tom to the Other, she tells him he has to wake King Arthur from his long sleep on Avalon.
Tom starts a journey that will change his life forever.
He finds a world where magic still exists, and mythical creatures walk among fey. And he finds that the legends he thought were myth are very real.
So are ancient enemies.
If hes to survive, he must learn to fight, and find courage he never knew he had.
Hes about to become part of a legend.
If you love magic, mystery, and Arthurian legend, youll love Toms Inheritance.
I have always enjoyed Arthurian tales but this beats the lot.
The characters are delightfully complex and intriguing, and all so different.
This is such a fun and magical adventure.
So beautifully written and descriptive.
I really, really enjoyed this story.
I am looking forward to getting started on the next book in the series Twice Born, which is about Merlin.
Can't wait to see where all the series leads.

The first of Bernard Cornwell's so-called Warlord trilogy novels, which are a retelling/reimagining of the King Arthur Legend.
These are also novels that - despite being the author's own personal favourites of the (many) novels he has written - I have struggled with, never really getting into them or feeling any connection with the story or character in the same way as I do towards Uhtred of Bebbanburg, or to Richard Sharpe.
I don't know whether that's because these are so different than I was originally expecting (the magic and mysticism of the tales, here, are more to do with superstition and ignorance), or whether because it may be fairer to call these a tale of Derfel, who narrates the story in later life in a monastery and how - here- he first came to the service of Arthur, the King that never was.
Maybe also because of the Dark Ages setting, which - obviously, since so little is known of that period (hence the name Dark Ages!) - means that Cornwell can't really bring history to life like he does in most of his other works?
