Disappointing
Last night I took Mrs B along to see this, much anticipated, much hyped movie. And to say we came away disappointed is an understatement.
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are both amazing in this, particularly in the early parts of the movie as we're introduced to both characters - music legend Jackson Maine and aspiring singer/songwriter Ally. The songs they sing, the story of them meeting up, falling in love and touring together, it's all good. But then things begin to go downhill for Jackson, while Ally gradually becomes more and more like Lady Gaga. There are some great moments in the latter half of the movie, but it's mostly Jackson slurring his words while you try and work out what he's saying and Ally doing choreography with her dancers and playing big gigs. And it drags, it really drags.
I actually heard some people behind me in the cinema complaining how boring it was. That's a little unfair, but there are certainly a lot of boring moments and I didn't feel it was worthy of all the hype.

Blew me away
I really did not expect to enjoy this film as much as I did. I have never seen the original versions so I don't know how it compares but I really loved this film. The acting and singing is so good from Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. This film just draws you in and make sure you have some tissues handy. I absolutely loved it.

Amazing performance by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Wonderful story about the life as a famous person and the toll it can have on a human being. And finally - the importance to always stay true to who you are, and tell the world your story in your own words. They will listen, and some will stay, some will go, but at least you won't have the burden to try and please the wrong crowd.

The story that's been resurrected more times than Dracula is back again, this time with Bradley Cooper as troubled country-rocker Jackson Maine, and Lady Gaga as the aspiring singer-songwriter who starts off as his protege/girlfriend but whose talent threatens to eclipse his. Better bring your hankies (or some kind of absorbent cloth, anyway).
Well, the good news is that Cooper can sing and Gaga can act, so the film hangs together as a dramatic musical, but it's still probably at its best when Cooper is acting and Gaga is singing. Some of the songs are absolutely lovely, but to be quite honest, the film goes on a bit too long, especially the wallowing-in-existential-misery stuff near the end. It's also made quite clear from the opening moments that Cooper's character has problems, so the story kind of comes across as one last detour on the way down than a genuine romantic tragedy.
Still, well acted, well sung, convincing stuff: the kind of old-fashioned meaty melodrama that often does very well for itself both critically and commercially, though it may have come out a bit too early to really storm the Oscars next year. Brace yourself for a remake of The Bodyguard with Katy Perry or Taylor Swift, I shouldn't wonder.

A Man is Bored
Watched this last night with my wife. About half way through, she asked if I liked it. I said "Not really." She laughed & said the same. There's no question that Lady Gaga is talented. Every time she sang, her voice gave me chills. Her acting is fine too. I like Bradley Cooper, but his singing is just not that good & his bad accent in this film just takes away any believability. That aside, I found the film boring. There is definite chemistry between the two stars, but I never felt any connection to any of the characters. It felt rushed. Everything happened too fast & I never felt like there was enough character development for me to like anyone. And for a movie over 2 hours, there should have been some sort character development. Without that, and without caring, the movie felt empty. When it was over, I was like, "Well, so what?" I still give it 5 out of 10, just to hear Gaga.
