"“Free Solo” is the rock climbing documentary du jour, and for very just cause. But Alex Honnold’s climbing partner Tommy Caldwell is also the subject of his own documentary, about a different historic ascent of El Capitan. It was directed by Josh Lowell and Peter Mortimer, and was released almost simultaneously with “Free Solo,” and thus hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. I saw it at its premiere at SXSW in March, at which the entire audience erupted into a standing ovation – during the movie! I couldn’t help but go back for an encore screening a few nights later, which I think is the first time I’ve ever seen a movie twice at a film festival. While Honnold’s achievement is certainly more historic, Caldwell’s unbelievable life story and his accent of the titular wall with Kevin Jorgensen makes for one of the most triumphant feel-great narratives I’ve seen in years. I would recommend watching both docs, back to back, and then joining a climbing gym."

"The best book I’ve ever received as a gift was actually the best gift I ever received from my mother, too. When I was young, she gave me “Letters: Summer 1926,” about the three-way correspondence between Rainer Maria Rilke, Marina Tsvetayeva and Boris Pasternak. Three brilliant minds that had never met, all writing sonnets and passionate letters to each other for four years, eventually falling in love with each other through this correspondence. Seeing this love triangle unfold through actual letters was very exciting for me as a young girl. Later in life, I met Susan Sontag, and she told me she wanted to give me a new edition of a book for which she had recently written the foreword. You can understand my surprise when I discovered it was this very same book. She was always giving me books over the course of our friendship, but this one is the most precious to me, especially since she is no longer with us"

Biopic of the legendary actress and singer is pretty much exactly the film you'd expect, which may be an issue. Another one of those movies depicting an icon in their later years, struggling for happiness, reappraising their life - it's not unlike Stan and Ollie, and the two films do share a character (though played by different actors).

Full-on give-me-an-Oscar performance by Zellweger, and as a piece of impersonation it's very impressive; perhaps it works so well because Garland was one of those people so hollowed out by the demands of the entertainment business and their own talent that they only really had any kind of identity when they were performing. Consistently tragic, as you would expect - I ended up feeling quite angry on Garland's behalf, which I didn't expect, and there are some unexpectedly moving moments. Well put together and nicely played, it covers all the basics but doesn't really excel in any department.

Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) was a High School basketball phenom who walked away from the game, forfeiting his future. Years later, when he reluctantly accepts a coaching job at his alma mater, he may get one last shot at redemption.

First of all I have to say that the thought of a film based around basketball wasn’t something that appealed to me on first hearing about Finding The Way Back, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the film and how powerful not only the performances were but the story and feel of the film.

This is a movie that is one that you can sit back with and take in the story and how Affleck’s character’s life took a turn after his Basketball career ended, but he has the chance to come back when he is asked to coach the school team which hasn’t won any games in such a long time.
