Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated The Big Burn in Books
Jan 12, 2018
[The Big Burn] by [Jeanette Ingold] is an excellently written historical fiction that deals with an interesting topic. The plot is focused around three young people: Elizabeth, a homesteader with her sister, Jarret, a fire fighter, and Seth, and African American soldier. The even that brings them all together is the forest fires of 1910 in Idaho and Montana know as the Big Burn.
[Ingold] tells a fast moving tale through the various perspectives of those involved. The fact that she chose very different characters but remained historically accurate says a lot about the skill of the author. This book is a welcome addition to any classroom library, especially for those reluctant readers.

I was so looking forward to this book, and almost bought it. But, the library had it, so I just rented it. THANK GOD I did.
I really, really, REALLY disliked this book until the last 90 pages or so. It was so slow moving, and this book isn't even that long! The chapters jump between multiple characters, all of whom are claiming this miraculous child that was seemingly dead. I thought it was fairly clear from the beginning that the reason the focus was on these families was because all of the events were related.
I loved Bellman and Black, hated the Thirteenth Tale, and mostly disliked this book. I'm wary to read another Setterfield book now.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Star Wars: Queen's Shadow in Books

What a disappointment. I'm so bummed out that the first novel in the new canon about Padme was so boring.
Firstly, they should have given Padme to Claudia Gray, who has proven she gets the Star Wars Universe; her characterization of Leia has been amazing. Secondly, this would have worked as a political novel, had it been written for adults, rather than for the Young Adult crowd. I didn't have a problem with Johnston's Ahsoka novel, because it was Ahsoka. This is Padme for Christ's sake. I'm just so fricken disappointed because I've been waiting for more about Padme for 20 flipping years. I'm so glad I borrowed this from the library.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Captain Marvel, Volume 3: Alis Volat Propriis in Books
Apr 28, 2019 (Updated Apr 28, 2019)
FINALLY, my library had a digital copy of the 3rd volume of Kelly Sue DeConnick's 2nd Captain Marvel run (yeah, Captain Marvel's runs are confusing as hell). This run was right before Marvel Comics essentially blew up the universe for the battleverse.
The first issues involve Carol tracking down Chewie, her flerken, because she was stolen. they were generally entertaining. There was then a strange filler issue, which was meh, then Carol returned to Earth. A very strange collection overall, the first issues were the best. This volume also features my favorite Captain Marvel panels that I completely relate to...
Cough, Cough, had Larson actually read this run, she'd have known Carol doesn't wear makeup.

Great App and great books
I’ve been a Wattpad user for 7 years and have yet to delete the app. It’s a wonder option to read good stories for free and even write your own novel. I live is a small town with a small library (minimal selection) and no book store so this has been wonderful. Some may tell you Wattpad is only cliche Fanfiction stories but that is only one of the many genres. With the amount of amazing and original stories available, you’ll never run out of reading material.

Andy K (10823 KP) rated Super Mario Sunshine in Video Games

Mario and his Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device (F.L.U.D.D.)
EVERYONE who owned a Game Cube owned Super Mario Sunshine. It was a cultural phenomenon.
Mario could hover, bounce, shoot water and chase around his shadow self all while exploring many fun and interesting areas within this great Nintendo platformer which basically introduced the world to Game Cube.
While Mario 64 was the first step for Nintendo into the world of 3D graphics, Sunshine expanded on those ideas and created a truly immersive game experience few games have reached.
The replayability is amazing as we recently found out when we rediscovered this title in our now retro game library.
So much FUN!!

Great library

Music Online Offline and everywhere in between
Love Spotify.
Currently my family and I are on the family plan so we have 6 logins. With the ability to all have our own accounts inside the master account, this is perfect and worth every penny we pay each month. The free version of Spotify is good but it is nothing compared to the full blown paid version.
If you are on the fence about whether you should pay for Spotify or not, trust me... you need to splurge and at least try it.

Nicole Hadley (380 KP) rated Landforms in Books
Jun 18, 2018
Landforms by Mary Lindeen is an easy to read book for young readers in the Earth Science series. This book teaches the reader about the science of landforms, and their shapes. It has beautiful color photographs that help the reader to better understand mountains, hills, plateaus, etc. The book will help young readers learn about geography in a fun way in which they will understand. The vocabulary used in the word list is simple and perfect for young readers.
I would love to add this book to my classroom library.
I give this book 4.5/5 stars.
I received this book from Norwood House Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Steph (468 KP) rated Traitor's Blade (Greatcoats, #1) in Books
Jul 9, 2018
This book was an absolute delight! It had me captivated from page one and I could hardly put it down! I brought the book everywhere with me so I could get in a few pages in a spare moment.
I loved that the main characters were heroic, but not heroes. The whole concept of the Greatcoats being cast down by society and hated by everyone was fascinating to me. It made the characters more interesting and the struggles more real. The characters and plot was compelling. There was intrigue and action. I borrowed the first one from the library but have already purchased them all from a bookstore online so I can read the rest shortly! :)

Erika (17789 KP) rated How to Stop Time in Books
Jul 26, 2018
How to Stop Time wasn't released in the US until February of this year, but I had been reading on websites since the previous year that this was a must read, and amazing. Well... I think it suffered from too much hype, and I'm glad I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it full price.
The story was a perfectly good premise, however, none of it was really fleshed out. And then, out of nowhere, bam, it ended. I liked it, but I wish it was so much better than it was.
On a side note, this would definitely make a good movie, so I'm all on board with that.
