"When I was a teenager, I was an avid Smash Hits reader - all through the 80s, that's what I read. So when the Beastie Boys and Run DMC came along, I was all over it. We were nicking VW signs from cars, skateboarding. That was a really big thing for ages. I was into that stuff for a while but the one hip hop album I listened to the most was this one. It's another one that doesn't ever fade. It's got this depth to it, and it's easy. But it's also serious and it's bumping. Obviously there are loads of other really important hip hop albums for me: Notorious B.I.G, Dr Dre, Jay-Z. I get a similar feeling from listening to really good hip hop that I get listening to Nubian music. The whole way of writing with loops really appeals to me. It was weird because I was listening to a lot of this kind of music, and playing and listening to a lot of jazz but they were two separate worlds. I was really into guitar music as well. When I was a kid I was really into Van Halen, heavy metal and all that stuff. Those two worlds never quite joined together. It wasn't until A Tribe Called Quest, and Galliano, Joyful Noise of the Creator. That Tribe Called Quest album, for me, joined those worlds. They mined a lot of old Lou Donaldson records, and other things, but it sounded really current as well. It pulled a lot of things together. And obviously, it branched out to lots of classic 90s hip hop: Guru, Jazzmatazz, Nas. It was a really amazing time."

Wide range of topics, for example; serial killers, horrific old "treatments", terrifying "monsters" and loads more. (0 more)
Lore is the first podcast I listened to, my boyfriend got me into it and it's still my favourite. I ended up binge listening to it, and despite the fact that it had been released years prior to my starting to listen to it, I was soon waiting eagerly for new episodes to be released, as I had caught up.I am particularly interested in episodes about real life things like serial killers and old "treatments" but I also love episodes on paranormal/folk lore topics. Some episodes are actually terrifying one such episode is about dolls, I was listening to it late at night and had to turn it off until the next day.

Usually when I am listening to audiobooks I am also cleaning my house. It helps to make the task so much more enjoyable. Well, at one point while listening to this book, I had to stop what I was doing and listen very carefully. This book had more twists and turns than a roller coaster.

Glen Garber is a contractor in Milford, CT. He lives with his wife Sheila and their daughter Kelly. On a night when Sheila is supposed to be attending a business class, she ends up dead in the middle of the road from a drunk driving accident. This is so uncharacteristic of her, that at first Glen is very puzzled as to how this could happen. Then as the days and weeks go on and more people that are connected to his wife start dying, he starts to question if there aren't other factors that could have contributed to his wife's death.

Finding out who did this to his wife and his family, leads him on a wild goose chase all around the state and he finds out interesting information about his wife and her friends along the way. I didn't want to turn the iPod off while listening to this book. Definitely hard to put down.

Violin and Orchestra by Morton Feldman

"This is what I'm listening to most right now. Feldman is on constant rotation, but his series of pieces he wrote throughout the 70s for a solo instrument and orchestra is what I'm continually listening to. This version of Violin and Orchestra that the Radio-Sinfonie-Orchester Frankfurt did I'm obsessed with. I've been listening to it everyday for a little over a year. It’s one of my favourite pieces because of the forces that he’s implying but it does not sound like an orchestra piece. He’s so keenly aware of sound. He turns his eye to a different way of way of composing that makes it something that can’t easily be reduced into some formula. You can just get wrapped up in it. It’s mysterious and kind of unknowable. But it’s really compelling - I’m moved by how his mind works. He does away with very basic principles of orchestral writing, an understanding of chord progressions and melody and harmony, even rhythm. He develops the piece in a way that shows he’s clearly operating with another set of variables, like in the way he resolves a chord. You don’t feel the familiarity of that way of operating within Western music."
