Kyera (8 KP) rated The Geek's Guide to Unrequited Love in Books
Feb 1, 2018
The Geeks Guide to Unrequited Love is a fandom-lovers dream, minus the unrequited love. The story takes place predominantly at New York Comic Con, the second largest convention of pop culture fanatics (myself included) in the United States. You can tell that the author is either very familiar with the area from personal experience, or questioned a con-goer to get every detail. She mentions things like the cell service being spotty in the Artists Alley (it is) and the atmosphere you experience on the way to the Con. Its so fascinating to be walking the streets for a while when suddenly you notice a Spider-Man strolling out of a bakery, not too long after a group of wizards turn the corner and before you know it youre surrounded by a horde of enthusiastic, frequently costumed, nerds, geeks and fans of all ages outside the Javitts Center, where NYCC is held.
The atmosphere was authentic and made me feel like I was attending the Con as well, although that may be in part because Ive attended NYCC before I do believe that any reader will feel just as immersed. The world was the most enjoyable part of the book, as the characters were not as developed as they could have been. There were moments of clarity where you saw more into their motivations, but overall they werent memorable characters. Thats not to say there was anything wrong with them, they just didnt affect me as a reader.
It was an easy, enjoyable contemporary read that I think is perfect for young adult/teen readers who are fans of something and enjoy books that they can relate to on that level. You dont have to be a comic book or superhero fan to enjoy Comic Con, it is a refuge and a consolidation of all fandoms. If you love something, you will find something you can relate to at Comic Con and in this book.

I love the action in this book, the fact you are generally gripped and on the edge of your seat hoping everything will be ok with the crew. I also really get attached to some of the characters and feel like I get to know them.
The only partial complaint is that some of the technical aspects like weapon names etc could count some people out and they not get as much as enjoyment if don't understand everything

I won an Advance Reader's Edition of this book from the publisher, St. Martin's Press, via Goodreads giveaway. Thank you!
I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. I've been reading Nora Roberts for what seems like my entire life, and she consistently creates stories and characters that I fall completely in love with. This story grabbed me immediately and wouldn't let go. I saw another reviewer use the phrase "heartbreaking and beautiful," and I could not agree more. The characters are complex and interesting, and interact so well with each other that you almost feel like you're eavesdropping.
Also: I want to live and work on the Bodine Ranch & Resort. :)

If you are a Buffy fan, you will love this.
Recently rewatched this after being a huge fan when it was first on TV. I still loved it. I like the case by case episodes and the way the personal relationships are built. There is a comedic value in Angel that you just don't get in Buffy, it makes it feel a little more grown up. I am still a fan of Buffy, however, I think they got the formula better with Angel.

Caffeinated Fae (464 KP) rated Luke Skywalker Can't Read: And Other Geeky Truths in Books

I was really excited to read this book. I love all things filled with geekdom but this one was a little too much for me. I felt like this book was filled with so much opinion that I had a hard time finishing it.
The author was funny and it kept me entertained at times but I felt that this was a giant rant about fandoms. I think that this book could have been marketed a little differently. This is definitely a book that would fit in as a literary essay or critical thinking in a science fiction class. I enjoyed it but I really wish there was more to it than rants about specific details.
All in all, I'm not a huge fan but if you like rants or are missing that science fiction fanatic in your life, this would be the book for you.
