The American President (1995)
The American President (1995)
1995 | Comedy, Drama, Romance

"The next one is The American President. I’ve been talking a lot about romantic comedies lately because of Sleeping with Other People, and you know, I’m listing all my favorite rom-coms, and you’re talking about When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and things like that, that could just as easily be on this list for me; I watch those movies all the time and love them. But I realized it took me a second to realize that The American President is a romantic comedy, because it has a political angle, and it’s got that [Aaron] Sorkin dialogue. But it’s directed by Rob Reiner, and ultimately it’s just a full-on love story between these two people that also has snappy banter and comedic scenes. I think Annette Bening gives one of the best comedic performances of her career; she’s so specific. There’s a scene where, it’s like before her first date with the president, played by Michael Douglas, and she’s sitting in the office and she’s tapping her pen on the desk. The guy says to her, “What’s up? You got a hot date tonight?” and then she does this move where she goes to put the pen in a jar, and the whole jar falls over. There was something so effortless and so specific about that to me; it’s a moment that jumps out at me, in terms of making the work you’re doing funny, but still feeling in the moment. I don’t know how many times she shot that scene, but it looks so natural. When I watch it, I find it hard to believe that it wasn’t really an accident that she knocked over that jar, and that’s incredible. I love that movie, and I love Annette Bening. And her hair. And her shoulders, her shoulder muscles when she’s dancing with the president in that blue dress. These are all things I aspire to."

Storyline
I absolutely love medical dramas so this show immediately interested me. The cast was amazing and portrayed their characters very well. One of the main characters, Conrad, is a very charming but arrogant doctor that is also very caring underneath his ego. You can't help but to love his character. The interactions between the doctors and patients are believable and add to the overall tone of the show. The show has the perfect balance of drama, intensity and comedy to keep it lighthearted. It is a very enjoyable show to watch. If medical dramas are your thing or if you just like a little bit of suspense with a dab of romance underneath then this might definitely be the show for you.

Thought provoking and sometimes scary as hell!
I love this podcast. Paranormal investigators, Dave and Tim talk over all topics from ghost to aliens, cryptids and everything in between. Weekly they do a Supernatural News and Parashare episode that is one of the highlights of my podcast feed. Other episodes are very topic driven and guest driven. Make sure you give it at least 3 episodes to decide if you like it or not.

Kept at the edge of your seat
What an amazing book! Dark, clever and thrilling! My favourite read of 2020
I read this book not realising that it was part of a series but I felt like if you didn't want to read the books in order than you don't have to.

The story lines are different but same characters are used.

The chapters are short, but captivating

This book was an amazing read and I can't wait to read more of Cavanaghs books as he is now my favourite author.

I recommend if you love a good, dark thriller

A Movie That Succeeds With Truly Memorable Characters
The story follows the highs and lows of high schooler Napoleon Dynamite. This is one of those movies you can’t help but like as it’s truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. I have yet to run into someone that didn’t like the movie, but I’m sure they’re out there.

Acting: 10

”What are you gonna do today, Napoleon?” a kid on the bus asks.
”Whatever I feel like doing, gosh!”
Napoleon responds. It’s hilarious because it totally comes out of left field and never fails to make me bust out laughing no matter how many times I watch this scene. It sets you up and the laughs keep coming!

Characters: 10
Napoleon (Josh Heder) is truly a man all his own. He moves about with a breathy nerdiness that’s both hilarious and a little endearing too. Again you can’t help but love him. Without him, there is no movie. That’s not to say that you won’t love all the other characters as well. His brother Kip (Aaron Ruell) can’t stop talking about his internet girlfriend LaFawnduh and is totally all in his on his rap career. Napoleon’s friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez) talks in a low voice barely above a whisper and you wonder just how the hell he is going to have a shot at winning class president. And I haven’t even gotten to Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) yet! Yes, there is much to love about these memorable characters that truly stand out.

Cinematography/Visuals: 10
Director Jared Hess shoots this in a way that’s wonderfully confusing. You don’t really know what year it is or just where the hell the setting is located. It’s a beautiful hodgepodge of nowhere and I love it.

Conflict: 2
One of the weaker points of the movie. The movie seems to wander about aimlessly from scene to scene with no strong storyline to boot. I’m ok with it because it’s so damn funny, but this movie would have hit the classic level for me had they given Napoleon some adversity to overcome.

Entertainment Value: 10
Despite the lack of conflict, the movie is entertaining from start to finish. I was cracking up the whole way through. I would be very surprised if someone watched this and couldn’t find at least a handful of parts they enjoyed.

Memorability: 10

Pace: 9

Plot: 1
Again, had there been more of a story, this movie easily makes my Top 100. Napoleon Dynamite is not so much a story as it is a journey. It’s like watching a number of funny sketches wedged between a beginning and an end.

Resolution: 10
There is no strong showdown where Napoleon conquers his demons or a moment where Napoleon finally finds that thing that he’s looking for. But there is an unforgettable dance sequence followed by the most hilarious tetherball game ever. And, you know what? That’s good enough for me.

Overall: 82
If you want to laugh your face off and originality like no other, look no further. Napoleon Dynamite is sure to make you at least crack a smile. Or, if you’re anything like me, it will make you split a rib.

I'm not sure what I think about this novel. I know that I liked it. I like Kitty Thomas' novels because they force me to think. I enjoyed the different aspects in this novel.

It seems that so many people are interested in BDSM and don't realize the depth that BDSM can go. I love the fact that Kitty showed the good along with the bad. Too many people think that BDSM is abuse and not in fact a lifestyle.

The characters are different and had some depth to them. This wasn't your run of the mill BDSM novel. It's not roses without the thorns. It's gritty and it forces you to look at your beliefs.

"Great record from a great band. I read somewhere that Quaristice was based more on systems they used for their live set at the time and the results are more spontaneous and less edited. I don't know if that's correct or if that was someone else's assessment but each idea feels really fresh and exciting. Usually people like an artists earlier work but I really love their most recent records the most. This is a group where anything they do, I love, but they're one of the few groups where I really like their newer stuff as opposed to their earlier stuff. I think that they've set themselves up to really do anything they want. And you kind of feel that in the way that they work now, particularly with these last five. They got a lot of flak for the previous record, before elseq 1-5, the Exai record. Everyone was saying "Oh it's too long, it needs to be edited!" so the next record they do is five records, four and a half hours. It was such a fuck you. They're operating on such a different terrain, it's exciting. But I like this record in particular because it has a feeling to it which I haven't heard in their other stuff. It did feel more live – it didn't feel as polished, not that their stuff necessarily feels polished, but their version of it. It felt more spontaneous, and it's just a great, great record."
