Important album at an important time
Fusing elements from several different musical styles including rock, jazz, funk and soul this came out at a refreshing time for music.
Grunge had yet to happen and the turgid, hair metal rock scene needed something to revitalise alternative music.
The alt-rock scene that also included FNM, NIN, RHCP etc refused to be pigeonholed into just one genre.
Perry Farrell was not only a great songwriter but also a tremendous showman - Electric onstage and difficult to take your eyes off.
From the instantly accessible, MTV-friendly Been Caught Stealing’ to the slowburning ‘Three Days’ which continues to sound better with every listen, this album is a must-have for anyone into guitar music.

While it never strays into noisy guitar for
the sake of it, it rocks when it needs to but it’s during the more melodic moments that showcases Jane’s sheer magnificence.

I really wanted to like this book, but perhaps I'm simply the wrong audience. The book takes place in 1987 with a group of 16 year old boys. I happen to remember that time, having been 30 at the time. Of course, I lived in a nice suburb of Chicago and these boys come from a less than affluent part of New Jersey, I don't think that they could have been as different as this book makes out. Some of the chronological/historical errors bothered me, and a few other details just didn't make sense (for example, would a single mother, forced to work night shifts for the extra dollar an hour, really have cable TV so her son could watch MTV? Personally, I doubt it). More importantly, the idea of petty crime and (even soft core) porn just didn't sit well with this nearly 60 year old mother, especially if 16 year old boys today might think it cool!
