A dystopian current affairs magical realistic fiction
A deeply tragic account of how two people can be caught in circumstances of war, how easy it is to lose everything and the potential hope that humanity offers. Saeed and Nadia attempt to face an apocalyptic situation in the face of adversity despite having a tenuous connection to one another. It is quite a depressing read especially given the current situation in the Middle East - but Hamid does a great job in humanising the characters. They are just two simple people attempting to make a relationship work under intense circumstances. A beautiful account, I just wished the story was slightly more developed as it tended to run from one scene to another.

I can't even remember how I got turned onto this story, I think it might have been my sister. She kept telling me how awesome it was, and I just had to see for myself. From the first moment, I was hooked. I got sucked into the wizarding world of Harry Potter so quick it was like a tornado hit. From the first page, I couldn't put it down, I had to know what happened. I think me I finished this one in two days, that's how hooked I was. As much as I've enjoyed Twilight and Catching Fire, neither of those series made me love to read as much as Harry Potter. Not to mention wishing I had magical powers.

This book is dark, mysterious, unforgiving, and perfectly written. I cannot express just how bloody murderous these main characters are. Told from different views and different sides of very different cultures one gets to see just what is happening in each of their heads. It makes the story that much more intriguing. Enemies to lovers. Enemies to friends. Magical powers given and taken, growth, culture, belief. This book has it all while still being cohesive.
If you are looking for a happily ever after story this is not that. But if you want a compelling read that is so unforgiving in its darkness that you cannot help but fall in love with it then this is the book for you.

"Curiouser and curiouser!”
Alice in wonderland is one of those pieces of media that even if you've never read the book or heck even seen the movie you know it... It's just that legendary.
The book is one of those pieces that no matter your age you can enjoy it. As a kid it's this magical wonderland of talking animals, weird people, and a very angry queen.. And you wish you could stumble down a rabbit hole it fall through a looking glass to get to because it all just seems to wonderful. As an adult it's really no different. The book is just fun and memorable and honestly the story has stuck with me my whole life and will always stay close to my heart.

David McK (3369 KP) rated Guard Against Dishonour (Hawk & Fisher, #5) in Books

Pretty much the very definition of pulp fiction, this is the kind of story that you tend to forget as soon as you've read it! While also never confirmed within this (or, to the best of my knowledge, in any of the Hawk and Fisher books prior to 'Beyond the Blue Moon'), there are also some very broad hints dropped that these two characters are the same protaganists as in Simon Green's 'Blue Moon Rising' novel.
Essentially, these novels are crime novels with a magical twist - personally, I find done so much better by Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of books featuring the City Watch. That's not to say these should be avoided: just don't go in with too high an expectation and you won't be disappointed!
