UNRAVELED BY DARKNESS is the second book in the Between Ruin and Salvation series and you ABSOLUTELY have to read book one to understand anything that's going on here.

And what is going on? Well, people keep making decisions for Ava, Makaii is still a first-class jerk, Derek is still trying to do the right thing, and Bailey is still enjoying her shopping! Oh, and there's just a small thing about Ava being pregnant and slowly going mad.

This book is so incredibly well-written, it took my breath away. Whether it was from cursing out Makaii to encouraging Ava. The story as a whole is fantastic; this instalment will keep you on the edge of your seat; the cliffhanger will have you throwing your Kindle at the wall.

Honestly can't wait for book 3 so I can clear my day and just sit down and read!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

"Today I am become death, the destroyer of worlds ..."
I meant to see this during the summer of 2023, but missed it.

Only saw it on a re-release, following loads of Oscar wins, in March 2024.

If I could compare it to a single other movie, that would probably be "Schindler's List": this (and that), I feel, is one of those movies that you can say you've seen, probably be glad you did, but wouldn't be rushing back to anytime soon.

As a Nolan movie, this is also told with lots of out-of-sequence shots, and jumping quite a bit between time: we have whole sections set in the 19402 (in colour) intercut with 1950/60s(? I'm not sure on the exact date) black and white segments.

The movie is also largely (but not exclusively) told through the eyes of Oppenheimer, following the work of a team of scientists who developed the first A-bomb, and only lightly touching on the effects of said bomb(s) being dropped on Japan.

It's a well shot and well acted movie, undeniably, but - as mentioned above - not one I'd be rushing back to see any time soon.

Would have been a decent film if it wasn't for the ending
Our Brand is Crisis is absolutely current for contemporary affairs given that it's a mix of House of Cards, The Ides of March, and real-life politics. The premise of the film looks completely realistic - a disgraced campaign manager discusses her role in manipulating election campaigns to sway the votes using 'crisis' rhetoric to engage the electorate. Sound familiar?

Sandra Bullock plays a brutal and a downright unlikable character but she's all about winning at any cost. In this case, after hiding away for several years following a public scandal, she's hired to back a dwindling presidential candidate in Bolivia. From dirty tricks such as spreading rumours, to even making her candidate appear emotional in a television chat show, she shows how fickle the election system is. All this down to fighting against an opposing campaign manager, played by Billy Bob Thornton, after he sabotaged another of her projects.

However, there's a reason why it hasn't received such great reviews. Right at the end of everything, she seems to gain a conscience which seemed completely uncharacteristic throughout. It changed it from a decently honest portrayal to a Hollywood film which was a real shame. It definitely had potential.
