A Different Take On A Tired Genre
Cargo is a recent zombie drama movie by Netflix. It stars Martin Freeman as a father who has been bitten by a zombie and has 48 hours to get his infant daughter to safety before the infection spreads through his body and he turns.

Honestly, the film itself wasn't what I was expecting from the trailer, it was much slower than I expected. I actually came very close to switching off during the movie's first act due to some of the inexplicably stupid decisions that the characters made, which led to them becoming infected. However, I stuck around as I like Martin Freeman and I love zombie movies.

While it was worth sticking around to see Martin Freeman give an incredible performance, (possibly the best of his career so far,) the film just didn't live up to the expectations that I had for it from it's trailer. There wasn't enough of a sense of urgency present in the movie. This is a man who knows that he is dying and must ensure his daughter is safe before he does, yet so much time is spent plodding about nonchalantly and going on pointless sidequests while the clock is ticking. The constantly depressing tone of the movie also becomes a slog after a while and in my opinion, the movie's payoff doesn't really justify the 100 minutes of bleak that we just sat through.

Overall, it's okay and Martin Freeman gives a fantastic performance, but there are better zombie movies out there and it's not something I would watch again.

Great characters including the villain one cares for! The struggle is real. The fight scenes are fine, but better is the why of the fight scenes. (0 more)
Martin Freeman is always great, but why is he in this movie? His character is superfluous. That's a teeny tiny complaint! (0 more)
See this movie!!!
Black Panther is race, politics and technology disguised as a superhero movie. It's brilliant!

Not a huge fan of Martin Freeman but he is great in this little movie about a family just trying to survive a strange virus that puts people into a zombie like state, cinematography is very good and you generally feel for him as he falls victim to the virus then struggles to re home his young daughter before he "turns"
Solid performances from the many small name actors, we need more like this from Netflix.

First series is the best series by far
Without a doubt, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman transformed the face of Sherlock, completely updating it for modern viewing. Sherlock is played to be on some kind of spectrum, which allows him to work out calculations at lightning speed. He's arrogant but hilarious and Watson is an absolute spellbinder of a sidekick. The bromance is beautiful. But the first series by far is the most coherent without going into odd tangents and storylines. Really worth the watch.

Top-tier Marvel superhero movie is essentially diversity wish-fulfilment, revealing the existence of a secret sci-fi African kingdom with technology from Star Wars and soundtrack from The Lion King, but disguises this supremely well with solid script, first class action, and charismatic performances.

New king (and part-time superhero) must come to the throne, cope with parental issues, deal with old enemy and malevolent would-be usurper. Contains some very interesting and subversive ideas about culture and colonialism; doesn't overdo this, of course. Chadwick Boseman radiates nobility and cool as BP, Andy Serkis has too much fun as ridiculously evil villain Klaw, nice support from Martin Freeman as token white sidekick/comic relief (nice to see a bit of diversity in the casting, guys). Marvel continue to do very little wrong.

Nothing new
The problem with zombie films now is that the whole zombie genre has been done to death (ha). There's far too many zombie films out there and sadly Cargo doesn't add anything new.

Whilst it has a slightly different take on the transformation into a zombie and this is done very well, this is just another apocalyptic zombie film, but this time it's set in Australia. The plot is okay but suffers from the main character doing a number of unexplainable and explicable things - he's got very limited time left, yet seems to thing it's fine to dawdle, faff and sit around doing nothing. Its a shame as Martin Freeman puts in a fantastic performance, he just doesn't have the unique plot to back it up.

I really wish they'd stop making zombie films now. This isn't a terrible film by far, it's just an entirely unnecessary addition to the genre.

I'm only giving this movie a 9, because I've honestly seen the same story line in dozens of movies. AND, I felt like the previews gave way too much away.
But, although the story was predictable, it was still very well done. The afro-futurism was so amazing, the costumes were so good, and I loved that they brought in all sorts of different cultures on the continent to Wakanda.
The cast did a brilliant job, and I loved that the warriors were women.
Now, Killmonger: Micheal B Jordan did a fantastic job with the villain. This villain was one of the better ones in the MCU, in a sea of generic villains (Loki excluded). Killmonger (as well as Loki) was a sympathetic (IMO) villain, there was a reason for his fall into villainy, being a product of his circumstances. You understood where he was coming from, and damn, his last line was intense.
Now: Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis. I had a major Hobbit flashback when Ross went to Klaue, I was half-hoping they were fixin to have a riddle-off.

Emotional Story About Father's Devotion To His Child During The Zombie Apocalypse
Contains spoilers, click to show
I like this movie. I mean an emotional journey of a father trying to find a safe place and people to take care of his baby daughter before he turns into a zombie is a great premise. Martin Freeman also puts on quite a good performance as he portrays the character Andy on this journey. The backdrop of Australia was beautiful as the setting in this movie too. This film has a well written plot and tense atmosphere but for me personally didn't quite reach fare enough into the horror genre to scare you and not enough zombie action. What it did have was added tension from the characters of other survivors and not knowing how they would deal with Andy being infected. I really liked some of the small details like how the little girl Thoomi made modifications to her shoes so her mother couldn't find her tracks or how she painted her face with stuff to hide her smell from the zombies. I even liked the villain's motivations and reasoning because they seemed realistic and very believable. Still it has me on the fence a bit because it feels like it was missing something when being considered a zombie movie. I wanted to rate it higher but personally feel like it deserves the score of 7/10.
