The Shining is a masterpiece is a lot of ways, Stanly Kubrick is Amazing
an Iconic Film. A must for the Horror fan. I highly recommend seeing the documentary on the visual tricks the film used, like the layout of the building and how it's impossible to actually be the way it is. Plus here's a alternate movie poster from Tom Whalen, one of my favorite movie poster creators.

I can see why this was such a big film for the time it was made in '83. Very violent, gritty, some shocking scenes and tons of swearing. You can see how it has influenced countless other gangster films since. While it is very enjoyable and entertaining, I wouldn't quite rate it as a masterpiece. The plot is actually very basic and straight forward and it's predictable. Al pacino's performance is what this film is all about, that and the bench mark for every gangster film made since.

Plenty of accurate cultural and time period related storylines
Interesting and diverse characters
Rare gem
The movie revolves around one hotel room over the case of several decades, from its inaugural tenants, to a chilling scenario on New Year's Eve of the new millennium. A masterpiece from Canada which is a rare find but totally worth it.

"The masterpiece. I keep an American Cinematheque membership; they do an amazing job of regularly screening classics (including many from the Criterion Collection) at two great theaters in LA. Bronwyn and I had the privilege of attending their screening of Seven Samurai at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica last year. Seeing this on the big screen, among the more talked-about aspects of this film, the unexpected humor really shines. It was the shortest, most engaging three and a half hours I’ve ever spent in a theater."
