Seminal day in the life of angsty teenage store workers. Great back story, and a hidden gem of the mid-90s. If you're not celebrating Rex Manning day every year, you're missing out. (Don't watch the re-mix versions, vanilla all the way)

Called to Justice is as much historical fiction as it is cozy mystery, and I found both aspects of the story to be riveting. A young, unmarried woman confides in Rose that she is expecting a child, and then ends up being murdered during the Independence Day fireworks celebration. Determined to find justice for the girl and her unborn child, Rose manages to squeeze in a little investigating, between birthing babies and checking on the well-being of her clientele of local women waiting to deliver.

There was a lot of attention to detail and historical accuracy where the births in the story were concerned. See what author Edith Maxwell has to say about midwives and the birthing process on my blog.

this is the first book in the series and omg what a start to the series. this book has a good mixture of humour, sweetness and steamy scenes. the steamy scenes are so hot it sets the pages alight. the characters are very well written. this is definitely a hot summer read, you’ll never want to put down

"For good measure, and because of its brilliance, I include Douglas Botting’s biography of Maxwell, as the Germans say, “in partnerlook.” An immersive portrait of a fascinating and haunting man, traveler, naturalist, shark fisherman, art historian, bon viveur, classical romantic adventurer and tragic hero of his own high drama. A great life story, written by a friend, of a life lived with legendary vigor, idealistic courage and a heartbreaking undertow."

Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud and the Last Trial of Harper Lee

"For fans of To Kill a Mockingbird who always wondered (at least until Go Set a Watchman came out) why Lee never produced another book, this story will answer, at least in part, that question. Willie Maxwell was a preacher and a con man and a murderer. This is an intriguing, though I wouldn’t say totally unique, combination. Well, it was enticing enough for Harper Lee to sit in on the trial and spend years trying to make a book out of it as a follow-up to the sui generis Mockingbird. She never managed to do it, but Cep has brilliantly presented for our reading pleasure the full story here. She does so in lyric prose and concise presentment of facts. Maxwell is enough to justify a book all by himself. When you throw in Harper Lee, perhaps the most enigmatic and reclusive author of modern times (with the possible exception of J.D. Salinger), this is a no-brainer of a read. Enjoy."

This is the first of the Michelle Maxwell & Sean King series that I have read. I'm not normally someone who picks up a book from the middle of series...I like to read all the way through starting at book 1. However, not knowing any of the "back story" didn't harm my enjoyment of this book at all.
The premise of the book is very cloak & dagger stuff...Dept of Homeland Security, Cabinet memebers, federal prisoners, etc. There were a few places in the book that dragged a bit, but all in all it was a page turner from the outset. Maxwell & King are dynamic lead characters with more twists & turns than you can imagine. There is also a strong chemistry/attraction between them. Baldacci does a great job of putting that aspect out there without making it too sappy, something I hate in spy/action novels.
All told I really look forward to reading more books in this series, even if it means I have to read them out of order!
