Like a mash up of ‘Falling Down’ and ‘ The King Of Comedy’ this take on the Joker origin story was hugely satisfying and should be praised for doing something different and very un-comic book with the material . I could see where the story was going and wasn’t hugely surprised by how it ended , but the journey there..WOW. Joaquin Phoenix is simply outstanding as Arthur Fleck/Joker and if there is any justice in the world should surely be showered with awards for his mesmerising and twisted performance. Like Michael Douglas in ‘Falling Down’ you know he’s supposed to be “the bad guy” but you can’t help but sympathise with him after the shitty hand society has dealt him. Solid support also comes from Robert DeNiro in a small but memorable role. Highly recommended.

A complex and ambitious movie documenting several interconnected stories about the drug trade. Steven Soderbergh’s style is almost documentary like (plenty of shaky cam) and I liked his use of blue and yellow filters illustrating the different stories . Personally I found the film a bit overlong and some of the cartel storyline a bit draggy and convoluted. The film is more successful when showing the human side of drug addiction and I particularly enjoyed the storyline documenting the daughter of a senior politician tasked with tackling drug trafficking descending into addiction. Michael Douglas performance here was excellent and quite moving and definitely the standout amongst the ensemble cast. So a very impressive movie for its scope and scale, not all of it works but what does works very well.

The Jewel of the Nile- is a good film, the cast is back, the action, the romance, the adventure, the drama and the stone. Its now a jewel.

The plot: Novelist Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) is living with adventurer boyfriend Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) on his yacht. But she leaves when Omar (Spiros Focas), the head of a North African nation, asks her to visit his country and write about him. Jack intends to go on a pleasure cruise to Greece, but when he learns that Joan is a pawn in Omar's quest to polish his image and gain greater power, he partners with continent-hopping criminal Ralph (Danny DeVito) in a quest to free her.

The first one is better, but this one is good.

Essentially a heist movie, with Paul Rudd in the lead role as ex-con Scott Lang, and with (in the intro, a de-aged) Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, the original creator of the Ant-Man suit when has hidden his creation from the world following a family tragedy.

However, when his ex-protoge also managed to unlock the secrets of the Pym particle (which allows the user to shrink or grow), Hank Pym - and his daughter, as played by Evangeline Lilly - must find a way to stop him from selling his yellow jacket suit to the highest bidder (ie Hydra: "they're not what they used to be"), which is where the cat burglar Scott Lang comes in.

And, I'll admit, I laughed the first time at the Thomas the Tank Engine bit.
