A spotlight on the dark side of modern India
After 20 years, Arundhati Roy has returned with a stunning novel looking at contemporary Indian society through the eyes of a Hijra, an 'untouchable' called Saddam Hussein and various colourful characters on the periphery living in an old Delhi graveyard. The language and descriptions are decadent, but the political and controversial social aspect is truly groundbreaking, especially the content covering Kashmir. It's a pleasurable, satirical, and mildly dark read

The Kid Who Would Be King (2019) pulls contemporary adventure from the stone of legend.
Opening with exactly the same set-up and opening thematic point as “Justice League”, Joe Cornish takes the idea of a country and a world which has lost hope and, with a keen eye for contemporary resonance, weaves a wonderfully affirmative and inspirational tale from the ancient cloth of legend and the modern social fabric of present-day England...

It the best of the new Bond movies
By far, my favorite of the modern Bond movies. Armed with a license to kill, Secret Agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007, and must defeat a private banker to terrorists in a high stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montenegro, but things are not what they seem.
Cyn Armistead (14 KP) rated Demon Seed (Good Will Ghost Hunting, #1) in Books
Mar 1, 2018
Not the first time I've encountered this take ("demons" are just powerful beings in charge of a particular reality who have been labeled "evil" by beings from a competing reality whose PR has fared better in modern times) but I can't remember the last time it was pushed quite this heavily. I would probably advise most Christians, particularly Baptists, to give this one a pass.
Don't worry, you aren't exactly missing any deathless prose or original plotting, anyway.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2204 KP) rated Night Light (Restoration #2) in Books

In the second book set in a world were modern technology has died, the Branning family tries to help four kids who have been abandoned by their mother. Can they provide for four extra mouths? Where is the mother? The mystery isn't that strong, but watching the characters deal with their situation kept me turning the pages.

Sara Cox (1845 KP) rated Seven Viking Romances in Books
Aug 13, 2018
This is very easy to read, unlike a lot of translated classics. I highly recommend it. It is interesting as to what is classified as a romance, as the first story of the the seven wouldn't be deemed to the modern standards of romantic. However, after getting to know the definition of romance in this context, this is very different to the way we look at romance - in terms of love and gestures, the book becomes increasingly interesting.
James Koppert (2698 KP) rated Everybody by Logic in Music

Unstoppable
Almost a perfect album, it's when Logic trips over the more pop moments he lets himself stumble, although, ironically, his anti suicide song, one of the poppiest moments that is a powerful stand out track.
Logic has an amazing flow, his vocals are bouncy and full of energy, his lyrics are positive and upbeat even when angry. This is great modern hip hop by a true emcee and artist rather than a mumble rapper.

Interesting take on the Jokers past
Contains spoilers, click to show
Although not set in modern day, it could easily show the issues of right now. The way mental health is dealt with showing budget cuts and the lack of support leading to a crisis. The riots also show the unhappiness of many in the status quo. Great soundtrack that fits well with the cinematic experience.

I am a former emergency medical technician, so when I heard an ad for the creation of the modern ambulance service and paramedics, I had to listen to it. I found the topic fascinating and enjoyed the way the material was written. The content was presented with dialogue and suspense that brought the story to life. I scanned the list of episode topics and will definitely be listening to more of them soon.
