The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated Five Quarters Of The Orange in Books
Oct 5, 2020
This is the story of Framboise – no, not a bottle of raspberry liqueur (thank heavens), but rather the woman by that name from a farm on the river Loire in the French village of Les Laveuses. This is partially the story of Framboise’s troubled childhood with her brother (named Casis), sister (Reine-Claude) and especially her unwell and widowed mother (who was, of course, an amazing cook) during the years of WWII and Nazi occupied France. It is also the story of her no less troubling old age – accounted from the time she returns to the village in her ‘retirement’, in order to open a creperie. Matthew Krueger (10051 KP) rated Riding the Bullet (2004) in Movies

Roller-Coaster
Riding The Bullet- is a underrated psychological horror thriller film based off of a stephen king novel.
The Plot: Ever since his father passed away, art student Alan Parker (Jonathan Jackson) has been hypnotized by thoughts of death. After his girlfriend, Jessica (Erika Christensen), breaks up with him, Alan attempts suicide but is rescued by his friends. The next day, he learns that his mother (Barbara Hershey) has just had a serious stroke, and he sets out to hitchhike to her hospital. Along the way, he meets a series of strange people, including sinister George Staub (David Arquette), who may be Satan.
Its psychological, horrorfying, thrilling, chilling, spooky, terrorfying and super underrated.
I would highly reccordmend this movie.

Sammeh Lowry (15 KP) rated Coraline in Books
Jul 13, 2019
I am 25 years of age,and this book terrified me. I LOVED it, it was spooky it was creepy it was absolutely fantastic. The illustrations in it were just magnificent and the story itself was one I have never known before. It was so well written with just the right amount of creepyness. Coraline moves into a new home, but something doesn't feel right. Is it the mist? or the signs of danger people keep warning her about? It's not. It's the flat that is empty behind the door in the drawing room. Where her other Mother and Father live, with black buttons for eyes and papery skin. They're waiting for Caroline to join them and stay forever and ever. Oh I just LOVED it!

Awix (3310 KP) rated Mrs Lowry & Son (2019) in Movies
Sep 10, 2019 (Updated Sep 10, 2019)
It's Grim Up North
Biographical drama about the artist Lowry (he of matchstalk this-and-that fame); based on a stage play and it really does show. Middle-aged clerk Lowry works by day, tends to his clinging, unsympathetic mother in the evenings, and paints at night. Not entirely unlike a variation on Steptoe and Son, only without any jokes.
Well-played, naturally, and well-staged, naturally, but the scenes of the two of them in a small room together, with her crushing his dreams and obsessed with petty social concerns, quickly become repetitive: the brief sequences with Lowry articulating his thoughts on his art, occasionally recreating his paintings, are much more interesting. Watchable but a bit dull; doesn't really do Lowry's art justice.

Mel (490 KP) rated New Girl - Season 1 in TV
Oct 7, 2019
Most of the time I work my way through TV series jointly with my husband but it would be fair to say New Girl isn't really his cup of tea. I started watching it on a plane though and then have binge watched when I get the chance until I'd finished the first season.
This is true comfort viewing. Short episodes, likeable characters and a romantic subplot running through the whole thing about as subtle as an elephant. The best thing about romantic comedies is waiting out the will they won't they plot (it's never quite the same once they get together). If you like friends or How I met your mother give it a go.
