Maquia is a Japanese animation about a girl that doesn't age quickly, and a boy that she raises. It's about family, connection, love and what it means to be a mother. It's a beautiful movie that's also heartbreaking.

One of my favorite movies from the 80's. Molly Ringwald as the teenager done wrong is her favorite type of role. I love the story of a young girl without a mother who is raising her father. She falls for a boy from the other side of the tracks. I love Annie Potts character.

If You Want It by Jay Som

Track

""If you want it” is the opening track of her album “Anak Ko” which translates to “my child” in Tagalog. A term of endearment from her Filipino mother. I love her blend of droning guitar lines and bouncy bass lines"

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

Even if you've seen the movie - I still recommend reading the story! It's a sonnet to true friends, and family (especially mother-daughter dynamics), the scars of abusive relationships, and how these all intertwined can shape and change everyone involved. It's also funny! :)

Siddalee delves into her mothers past, curious about the Ya-Ya Sisters and their secrets. She finds out so much about her mother, and in addition, about herself. Her mother just might grow up a little along the way as well.

I love the Ya-Ya stories and I re-read them often, hoping Rebecca Wells might just write another!

"My mother wrote this memoir about her childhood, her bohemian and Beatnik friends, and her early love affair with Jack Kerouac. She was with him when On the Road came out, and witnessed how his sudden rise to prominence hastened his dissolution."

"Your mother wouldn’t approve of how my mother raised me, but I do, I think I do. And you’re an all-American boy, I guess I couldn’t help trying to be your best American girl.” I love that she opened up a conversation in this song about trying to navigate the coveted life of the “American Dream” while coming from a different culture and how difficult it can be for those ideals to intersect."

"Maya Angelou’s final work, published a year before her death, in 2013, when she was 85 years old. It was the first book to focus on her mother, Vivian Baxter, who abandoned Angelou when she was a child and it portrays their complicated relationship. The story is about the special connection between mother and child; both women found a way to move on and form a profound and enduring bond of love and support."

Perfect for Pagan parents (2 more)
Great illustrations
Uplifting story
Wonderful book for a Pagan mother to read to her kids, it's a lovely rhyme, I especially loved
"She believes love can heal with a power that's divine,
So she kisses you better to make you feel fine.
Her magic is ancient, her wisdoms not new;
It was used by her mother and grandmother too"

And the illustrations fit it perfectly. My son grinned all through it!

One of Disney's best!

This is a movie the whole family can enjoy. My 5 year old son loves this movie, I love this movie, my boyfriend and my mother even love it. I love the fact that Moana is such a strong, relatable character, and it's great that Maui is portrayed as having his own self esteem issues and problems. I love the message of importance of treating the Earth well. And, of course, the music is great. I can watch it over and over.

"Terms of Endearment. I absolutely love that movie, with Debra Winger, Shirley MacLaine, and Jack Nicholson. One of my first tearjerker films. It was so good to see that mother-daughter dynamic, the love story kind of playing out, and just to see their love, and dealing with men. Shirley MacLaine — the acting between her and Jack Nicholson was just awesome. It was just really one of my first tearjerker movies. I remember going, “Oh my God! I love that!” That was a good movie.”"
