Anne (15117 KP) rated Mulan (2020) in Movies

Rating between 6 & 7 - Not quite what I expected
Thanks to Smashbomb for letting me watch and review this movie. I was looking forward to seeing this movie and what they did with it, but it wasn't as great as I expected or hoped it would be.
The thing is this was supposed to be a remake of Mulan - a live-action version instead of the animated one, but a remake nonetheless and this movie was not Mulan. It was like they took the very basic storyline from the animated Mulan and then completely redid the movie into something totally different.
This movie was like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon crossed with the basic idea of Mulan. What my husband said and I agreed with him is that this movie is okay on its own by itself, but looking at it as a live-action remake of the animated Mulan it's not so great.
I liked the general idea of the movie, the special effects, and the different background for Mulan with some of the changes in the movie, but it just wasn't Mulan. I still prefer the animated version myself.

I have to admit, I am one of those people who doesn't really get why they are remaking animated Disney movies and not just...animating them again. Live action is fine, but animation, especially American animation, is just much more expressive. Mulan falls victim to this problem. If they didn't try to follow the original somewhat, it wouldn't be true to the source material & if they didn't try something new, it would just be a rehash. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed quite a bit of this movie, but the finished product didn't really feel like it had a purpose.
My biggest issue is that every new idea they added never felt like it went anywhere. "Here's another woman who is a powerful fighter like Mulan...oh wait she let's gone." "Mulan has a sister! She adds nothing to the plot." Nothing new is ever followed through in an interesting way and just seems half-heartedly thrown in. This basically just leaves the rehashed parts of Mulan which, outside of more serious fight scenes...isn't all that interesting
Is it worth watching once? Sure. Is it something worth watching over and over again like the original Mulan, or heck, even the straight to DVD sequel? Well, that's obviously up to you, but I likely won't be watching this again anytime soon.
Also, replacing hard-work, dedication, and a good old fashioned dose of pig-headedness with chi is a lazy way to try and separate a remake from it's source.

Matthew Krueger (10051 KP) rated Mulan (1998) in Movies

Mulan- is a strange movie, cause it came out after "The Lion King". And the movie's after "The Lion King" were stange. What im saying is after "The Lion King", disney decided to go really strange/a huge left turn/didn't expect that/disappointed and overall a huge downfall. But i will get to those movies. Oh this is one of them.
Mulan does have good songs like.."True To Your Heart", "Reflection", "Honor To All Of Us" and "Ill Make A Man Out Of You".
The plot: Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu (Eddie Murphy), she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.
Its a good movie, i liked it.

Auburn (57 KP) rated The Warrior Maiden (Hagenheim, #9) in Books
Apr 10, 2019
Another fantastic addition to some wonderfully reimagined fairy tales. The author does a beautiful job weaving the classic story of Mulan in a Lituanian world. It also gives us a look at two of the youngest members of the Duke of Hagenheims family.
Throughout each book another fairytale unfolds and one of the Dukes children is a central part. I enjoy seeing what happened to the older children now married and how we receive a glimpse of their furtures through these books.
As always it is a well done version of Mulan that captures the soul of a warrior. A must read for fans of romance, fairy tales, and Melanie Dickerson's stories.
