graveyardgremlin (7194 KP) rated The Wicked Boy: The Mystery of a Victorian Child Murderer in Books

Mostly interesting, there were a few drier spots, but luckily they weren't excruciatingly long or anything. I don't find Summerscale's writing inspiring but overall it's fine. I appreciate how she followed the story through all the research she did, which must have been painstaking. Definitely a curious read, with plenty of notes and resources listed in the back. For a readalong, I'd recommend [b:The Invention of Murder: How the Victorians Revelled in Death and Detection and Created Modern Crime|16045108|The Invention of Murder How the Victorians Revelled in Death and Detection and Created Modern Crime|Judith Flanders|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1367749663s/16045108.jpg|14980279], which is excellent and never boring.

Cumberland (1142 KP) rated Four Dead Queens in Books

Murder Mystery
I'm not usually interested in murder mystery, but I really enjoyed this book. It was told in the alternating perspectives of the Four Queens of Quadara and a Thief named Keralie. Keralie is the MC of this story, and she is trying to discover who killed the Queens. She meets a boy named Varin who is trying to help her dispite coming from a different background, and knowing that she is untrustworthy. The story has a lot of twists and turns that make it hard to put down. All of the characters are interesting, and each one of them has secrets that they are hiding. The question is what secret is worth killing for?

This wasn't a bad book.. not really my thing and some spots seemed a bit odd for me but overall I enjoyed the mystery and murder to it.. I enjoyed seeing how the politics played into the mystery of this story. I am not a bit political person so that might have been part of my not being as into it as I normally would be.. however the murder mystery part of it kept me interested and invested. the writing did have some amazing feelings and emotions.. I felt with duncan on his daughters death... I felt his confusion and fear and pain. I am glad i got to review this one
Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2436 KP) rated Quickstep to Murder (A Ballroom Dance Mystery #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Stacy is stuck with her ex-fiancee as a business partner because she can't afford to buy him out of their ballroom dance studio. However, when the police find his dead body in one of the rooms, they think Stacy killed him. Can she prove herself innocent?
I really liked the characters from the start, and the plot kept me engaged from beginning to the end. My only real complaint was that Stacy seemed to have a day with many more than 24 hours in it to do all she did plus solve the murder.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2436 KP) rated Murder on Bamboo Lane (An Officer Ellie Rush Mystery #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Elllie Rush is a rookie with the LAPD bicycle patrol division. Her desire to become a detective gets an early start when she gets involved in the murder of a classmate. Is she helping the investigation? Will it help or hurt her career?
This new series from Naomi Hirahara is off to a great start. The characters are fully formed already, and that gives a depth to the plot that I really enjoyed. The plot was interesting with some nice misdirection and twists along the way. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.
