"Hair is a really cool musical. It's about the late 60s’ hippie movement in America - tribal love, peace 'n' love 'n' rock 'n' roll, people tripping on LSD and expanding their consciousness, all of these concepts that came about in the late 60s’. It's one of my favourite periods in music and in the arts, it was sort of our American renaissance right around then and lot of incredible music came from that time. “I'm an Aquarius; that's my zodiac sign. I think the song is talking about the Age of Aquarius, which was starting around that time, which was said to be a time of enlightenment. It's such a cool song, it has a great melody and I've always loved it. “I ended up doing a production of Hair out in Germany when I was about 22. Personally, it was such an eye opener, I was pretty green when I went out there, but not so green when I left. I was doing a lot of things for the first time and experiencing a lot of things for the first time. “It was a bit of an awakening for me - artistically and personally - with fashion and with sexuality and with all these different things. It was a big transformative moment for me and this song always reminds me of that time.”"

"I chose it mostly for its beauty. I like the heart-wrenching minor chords. I'm a bit of a sucker for that, and again I find there is such a soothing quality to this record. It is on the melancholic side of things; it's not a sunshine album. But it is the kind of album where if you're not feeling too great you put it on and think oh well, there are people feeling much worse than I am! So cheer up! It has that kind of effect. I'm particularly in love with the string arrangements. I don't know who did them; I don't read the liner notes, but they really work for me. Beck worked with Thurston Moore on Demolished Thoughts, and again there is the same kind of string arrangement that comes in and out of songs. It holds much emotional power. In the earlier parts of the 90s we played some concerts with Sonic Youth, Beck and us, and festivals as well. He was a really good person to come across. I haven't crossed paths with Beck for many years now, but he is someone I would really like to work with, just on the strength of that production and those strings. I think we share musical terrain and I'd really love to work with him."

"When we were talking earlier about a record accidentally affecting a whole community of musicians in a particular town, this is a record which came out on the same South Korean label that reissued the Erkin Koray album. I don't understand the lyrics so I just enjoy the emotion. I think she's a really popular singer in Korea but I've no idea if the lyrics are mediocre or profound! But anyway, I was playing some records in the market in Cardiff with DJ Esther and Don Leisure - whose album Shaboo came out in 2018 and is really great, instrumental sampled hip-hop - and they were both playing this Kim Jun Mi album! I was like 'I know this one' and we had a chat about the album. Later that week, I was having a cup of tea outside a café and a fellow musician, Carwyn from Colorama, stopped to tell me he was walking through the market the other day - he was probably buying veg or something - and heard this track and started describing it to me and it was clearly Kim Jung-Mi. I like the idea of four people in a loose musical community just turned on randomly through geographical reasons by a record that might influence them. It's a community generating a unique cultural identity through chance happenings."
