This is the story of Michael Rosen’s experience with Covid-19. How he became ill, then very ill, was hospitalised, put on a ventilator for 48 days, and his hard work back to good health - with complications included.
I can remember being really worried when Michael Rosen said he was feeling unwell last year, and even more so when it was reported that he had been taken in to hospital. There was that long period where I could only imagine how distressed his family must have been feeling.
This book documents it all. There are the diary entries from the carers whilst Michael Rosen was in an induced coma: the nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists - all those from right across the NHS who helped him, turned him, talked to him, kept him clean and made sure that he heard from his family. They clearly did an amazing job, and this showed the sheer volume of people who cared for him.
It’s a really moving book. I read much of this with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. And of course there were the funny bits, as there always is with Michael Rosen.
I’m just so glad he made it. This book is going on the Keeper Shelf, because this will be a book that we will all look back on in years to come, when memories of Covid-19 start to dim.

Funny and heartbreaking at the same time (1 more)
Quick easy read
Aches and pains with laughter
Full disclosure this is not a book I would normally have read however I had heard good things about it and saw it as a smashbomb giveaway so thought I would enter and I was lucky enough to be selected thank you.

The premise of the book is simple. It is a trainee Doctors diary with various entries of the course of their many years of long hours having to deal with anything that came through the doors during their hospital postings. The chapters are split with each progression through the training ladder and even explaining the process quite well for those who are not aware how crazy the system appears.

  I found myself laughing out loud for some of the entries, especially those concerning the removing of alien objects from the body. Aghast at others over what Doctors have to go through on a daily basis and with a lump in my throat over moments of heartbreak mere lines later.

I enjoyed the book immensely and found myself re-reading paragraphs and even the odd few pages to let it all sink in. The plaudits from various celebrities in the cover do not really do it justice but are well deserved. It is a very easy to read book and you would be hard pressed not to come away with a greater admiration for the NHS and its staff have to go through.

I finished this a while ago and it has taken me a while to find the words to describe how heartbreaking this truly is. This book is filled with diary entries from a doctor: from training to the end of his career. Behind the hysterically funny incidents (it amazing what people shove up vaginas and bum holes) is the painful truth in how we are working our NHS staff to the ground. How they have to advocate healthy mental well-being, work-life balance and self care but the majority of the time they cannot practice these vital aspects of life themselves. And it's through no fault of their own. It's through a system that is so understaffed that it relies on the goodwill of staff and something has to give. I cried for Adam when I read the diary entry about picking up his stuff after the break up from his partner. Another thing that shocked me about the anecdotes is how surprisingly "throw them in the deep end" the training seems to be. It must be truly terrifying to have a training system that is "watch once, do once, teach once". Please don't be put off by the negativity I've seemed to have painted here. It is truly an hilarious book. There are some really memorable anecdotes that had me in stitches and that I keep telling my friends about: my favourite being the sharpener comparison (I shan't spoil it for you, if you've read it and know what I'm talking about just give me a wave!) I cannot wait to read Adam's next book. It's on my Christmas list 😉
