Max Hastings is another author that makes non-fiction read like fiction. This book did a great job to really streamline the reasons why the Great War started in 1914, and covered all of the activity until 1915.

Some of the short stories were amusing, but too much of the fiction was excerpted from well-known novels. I have to admit that I only skimmed the non-fiction, which makes up the majority of the book.

300 years of history painstakingly explored
I'm not a non-fiction reader but this book was amazing. It's definitely an ambitious one, challenging itself to cover the entire 300 years of Romanov rule in Russia and managing to do justice to every era.

Good range of facts at an appropriate level for most KS1 children. It was very much enjoyed by my class and helped drive our non-fiction writing.

I now know way more about elephants. This book was ok. I didn't see the plot twist coming, which was good. But I needed more story and less non-fiction.
