Hazel (2934 KP) rated The Doll's House (Helen Grace, #3) in Books

This is the third book in a series but the first I have read. I think I was at a slight disadvantage not having read the first two but not so much as it spoiled things for me because I was highly entertained by this book.

Not really my cup of tea.
I love period dramas but found this one ho-hum, humdrum. And I don't mean that because of the dull colors of the set and costumes or the squalor of London residents and mill workers. I didn't really feel anything for most of the characters, except for the one suffering from the fatal lung ailment, and really could not get into it. I watched the entire series, though, because I was curious about it but it didn't really connect with me. I have not read the book that this series is based on so my judgment is in ignorance.

I created a video explaining my slow decent into hating this series, book by book, for your viewing pleasure:
This one is better than the last one, but considering I'm comparing this to other books in this series and not saying it's all around 'good' or 'ok' should imply something to you. At least this one was faster paced, but the sentences in this one blinded my English professor so...
It's funny, even though there only one more book, I only see darkness at the end of the tunnel.

having read the first two books in the series, I couldn't wait to read this book and I defiantly wasn't disappointed. I loved this story and the characters were really well written. the story is really heart warming, you'll not want the story to end. this book is a novella in the series. it is a fab quick read to help you get in the mood for the next one.

This is the first book in this series that I have read and I hope that after going back and reading the others in this series, that I can enjoy this one more. That said, this was not a bad book. Ms. Newport chisels her characters well, and the backdrop of the story is vividly created. Susanna and Adam’s characters really tugged at my heart, but I just couldn’t get as deep into the story as I would have liked to have gotten.
Something was missing. Or, perhaps, it was because I haven’t read the other books in this series and I just couldn’t fully grasp the entire setting. With that said, however, I still give this book 3.5 stars. Ms. Newport’s talent does shine through, and her characters do pull at your heart. I will be going back and reading the other books in this series then I will pick this one back up and try again.
I do encourage you to give this book a try, if you’ve read Ms. Newports other books in the series. You may fall in love with these sweet characters quicker that I did and you may love the story line.

Top-notch story telling (2 more)
Moves along at a great pace
Great voice & motion-capture acting
Uncharted: God of War
As I was playing this game, all I could think of was the Uncharted Series. Great stories, great cinematics, great game play. Now, I'm going to be honest, I am not a fan of the series. Not really into hack-n-slash. They bore me after a while & I wind up not finishing the game, as it gets too monotonous. But changing the game play to match the Uncharted series is brilliant! And it works so well. The learning curve is a little steep, with the ability to unlock new moves as you also upgrade your weapons.
At first I didn't like Kratos' son. I felt he was a little annoying & never used him in combat. But as the game progressed, I not only cared for him as a character, but as an intricate tool in my combat arsenal.
Each character is like a living being. You really feel for them. I attribute this to the acting & the writing. Like I say above, the story is top-notch. In fact, everything is top notch. If you're a fan of the Uncharted series and/pr the God of War series, then run out & get this.
