David McK (3692 KP) rated The Blood of Rome in Books

Hmmm ... I'm not sure what to make of this one, if I'm honest.
Book #17 (yikes!) in the Cato and Macro series (initially all with the name 'Eagle' somewhere in the title) this, if anything, is probably best described as a 'bridging' novel: there's a new Emperor on the Imperial Throne (see the previous instalment, Day of the Caesars), and war is brewing between Rome and Parthia.
Cato and Macro are tasked with restoring the ousted King Rhadamistus to his Armenian throne, but the King proves to be ruthless, ambitious, untrustworthy and (to the Armenians especially) unpopular.
Alongside those professional concerns (i.e. a dangerous mission into unmapped and unfriendly territory), Cato also still struggles with private concerns: was his now-deceased wife unfaithful to him, or not, that leads him to - at times - act completely out of character. Because of those concerns, I would not recommend this as a good 'jumping-on' point in the series: a little background knowledge in this, at least, would be useful.

I had been wanting to read this novel since I first saw the cover before it was even released. I don't understand why the cover is so delectable, but it made this novel a must read for me.
I love Lindsey's Malory Series. It's on my top 10 series list in fact. I have read some of her other works but this is the first in a few years. The greatest thing about Lindsey is that she knows how to tell a story. From her style to the dialogue, from the plot and character development to the story itself, the woman has a gift.
However, I did not fall in love with it the way I expected myself to. I love historical romance, and Lindsey is the Queen of Historical Romance. Despite this, I was not wowed like I thought I would. I loved how Lindsey put a little murder mystery in it. The twist towards the end was interesting, though not wholly unexpected.

As much as I enjoy this series, it's not one I seem to enjoy reading back to back. I got a little bored with some of the same stuff happening in this as the last. That being said the ending has me very intrigued as to what is going to happen next but I dont currently own books 4 and 5.

After reading the first in the series, i was looking forward to this one but for me it wasnt as good.
Not much seemed to happen in the story, unlike in the first where we had Sarah finding out about her warden job and Michael and the many other vampires who were about.
This one just disappointed me a bit...

I love love love this series. I can't wait for series 16 to start.
It has so many highs and lows. You go on the journey with Meredith. You see her grow and go through so much especially when Derek died. It's surprising how much someone can go through so much and carry on. I have laughed and cried. I only started watching the series in 2018 and I completely binge watched this and was watching 5/6 episodes every evening but wasn't bored. Sometimes I couldn't stop watching as the episodes always ended on cliff hangers. It's believable as bad things happen, people do die when some series bad things don't happen. So many shockers along the way. It is a series that you can get into no whatever what series you start on...Somethings may not make sense but you can still grasp. I prefer watching it right from the start. My partner is now hooked.

good enough for me to want to continue with the series.
Independent reviewer for Book Sirens, I was gofted my copy of this book.
This is the first book in the Beyond The Mist series, and as such lays down the ground work, the background into these vampires and how they came to be.
I enjoyed it, I did. It didn't blow me away, but it's left me intrigued enough to want to continue on with the series.
Not least because there are a whole host of characters we meet here who now need their stories. Korinna, especially and Roman, I think, needs a happy ever after. Andrei's brothers too.
Some smexy times, some violence, some darker themes. Vampires who shift! I liked that, it's different.
All in all, a good read, for me, but not a great one.
so, 3 stars, but I will continue with the series.
*same worded review will appear elsewhere
