"I discovered this series at a small gay bookstore when I was living above a hardware store in San Diego in the ’80s. I read the first book in 24 hours straight, no sleep. Then I devoured every other novel in the series — all of them — in one day each. If I had to Sophie’s Choice pick only a couple, I would say the first novel and “Babycakes,” topped only by “Maybe the Moon,” his unrelated tome."

Sometimes it isn’t easy to write a review of a novel that is always one of the first to come to mind when someone asks what is my favorite book of all-time favorite. But since this is my 300th blog post (already?), I thought the time was due to write about Joseph Heller’s iconic novel, Catch-22. The New Year always makes me ponder on the passage of time. That also made me think about this highly creative novel, which is a carefully written and fascinating to read, despite the somewhat unbelievable aspect that anyone could have a genetic problem that causes them to travel in time. Find out what I thought of this best-selling debut novel by Audrey Niffenegger in my review here. http://drchazan.blogspot.com/2014/09/take-time-to-travel-with-this-book.html

Once again, Fredrik Backman has a new novel, and this one is a sequel to last year’s “Beartown.” The last time Backman made a sequel, the second story took us away from of the first novel’s location. This time, he’s decided to stay put. Find out if this new novel will also be deserving of a spot on my “best of” books this year, in my review here.

In this sweeping historical fiction novel, Heather Chisvin takes us along a journey of two sisters who flee late 19th century Russia through to Canada and America of the early and mid-20th century. There, one sister must come to terms with her past, but the other continues to be tortured by it, with tragic results. You can read my review of Chisvin’s debut novel on my blog here.

In honor of my wedding anniversary, I thought I’d update one of my older reviews that I consider a classic love story. The one I picked is Marina Lewycka’s second novel “Two Caravans,” which American audiences you may know as “Strawberry Fields.” While this book isn’t quite as good as her debut novel, it certainly is fun! 7th novel in Terry Pratchett's ongoing Discworld series (and the first individual novel), this was quite possibly my introduction to that series - I can't remember having read any before this one (though I have read them all since).

As this is set quite early on, a lot of the now familiar characters were yet to be introduced and expanded upon. Indeed, you can even see the beginnings of what would become "Small Gods" in the pages of this book.
