Before the Titanic, there was the tragedy of the sinking of the passenger ship, the Lusitania, which was an event that forced the US into the first World War. In this carefully layered historical fiction novel, authors Williams, Willig and White bring us three stories of three women connected to one another and to that fateful sailing. In Heather Webb’s latest novel, she re-envisions Gaston Leroux’s story from 1910 about Christine Daaé, the soprano haunted by the Paris Opera’s “phantom.” This original dramatic work is now best known from its adaptation as a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Webb, however, has new ideas about who Christine and her phantom were. You can read more about what I thought of this novel in my review of “The Phantom’s Apprentice,”

In this debut novel, author Moriel Rothman-Zecher delves into both the political and the emotional conflicts that can exist between Jewish and Palestinian Israelis. However, despite the gravity of this subject, the author gives us a novel that is expressively written, that is important reading for anyone who wants to better understand the people behind these tenuous struggles. You can read more about this book in my review here.
