"The Book of Ecclesiastes probably inspired the opening line of Beckett’s first published novel (“The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new.”) Not Beckett’s most important work (whatever that means) or his most influential, but the one I love the most, maybe because he hadn’t yet perfected his art, maybe because it’s funny and sad and brilliant."

"About twenty years ago I was driving around Ireland with a friend. We stopped at a famous golf course and my friend played a round. Since I don’t play golf, I stayed in the clubhouse and read this novel. The Irishmen thought I was mad, a lone Yank sitting in the corner, laughing hysterically. The funniest book I’ve read"

"This wonderful short novel is a reminder of how jaded we’ve become as readers. I remember the exact moment (spoiler alert for 60-yr-old book) when I realized that this story about warring primitive tribes is set inside a lost generation ship. I was astounded by its (then) originality, and unassuming storytelling. And still am."

"Oh, Patty. I miss you! Her debut novel moved me really deeply. It's so personally written, although it is also a dry dissection of an experience with death, also of a brother. Having lost my own brother recently, Patty's book, along with “Fourteen Stories,” reminds me that there is a way out of grief, which is creativity."

The curmudgeonly A.J Fikry is an unlikely character to own the only bookstore on a New England island, but all that begins to change when someone leaves a 25-month-old baby girl in his store. They have been calling this "Water for Elephants meets The Night Circus." Since I've never read either of those books, I could enjoy it for what it is - historical fiction, woman's murder mystery with a touch of magical realism. You can read my review of this novel here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2015/03/10/illusions-and-elusions/

While it seems like Nellie Bly is a hot subject these days, not all novels about her, or that were inspired by her amazing work are the same. This new biographical, historical, women's fiction novel proves that, as you'll see from my review on my blog here.

Authors have always been told “write what you know”, but as far as I can tell, this is a rule that Mr. Burnett has shunned totally. Had it resulted in an unsuccessful novel, that would have been understandable. But amazingly, it doesn’t. O'Farrell spans half the globe to give us a fascinating and dramatic look at loss, secrets and relationships in her newest novel. Read what I think were this book's strengths and weaknesses in my review here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2016/12/31/here-there-and-maybe-nowhere/ (Sorry, Maggie - I can only give it 3.5 stars out of five.)

Cynthia Ozick is an amazing writer and I'm surprised I've never read anything by her before. This is probably one of the most unusual books I've ever read - and I mean that in the best possible way. You can read my review of this novel here https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2014/02/21/a-job-of-a-woman/
