"The life of every individual, sayeth the sage, runs along the line created by the intersection of two planes: personality and social setting. I can’t think of any American novelist who ever drew that line more brilliantly than James T. Farrell in this trilogy. If this be “plodding realism,” let every American novelist start plodding Studs-style, lest the American novel fall down in a heap and die, as it now seems wont to do."

"The only novel really to do anything true with the waves of revolt in Italy in the mid and late 1970s (until I wrote mine, heh). The voice here is transfixing. The end is so incredibly moving. You will need to adapt to Balestrini’s style of forgoing punctuation, but once you do, you’ll be riding a bike with no hands on the bars and you won’t even notice that you, too, are doing something new."

"This has been a cult novel in Sweden ever since it was published in 1980, and has to some degree been discovered in Norway, too. It steals from both the classics and pulp fiction and has this couldn’t-care-less-attitude combined with literary talent that reminds me of Jim Carrol's “Basketball Diaries.” Both have this special sense of time and place that makes you want to move to Stockholm or New York."

The second novel in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina takes place after the events of Part 1 of the television series. It's nice to have more details as to what happened concerning Nick and Harvey.

I'm a huge fan of the pairing of Harvey and Sabrina, so the whole Nick thing ultimately annoys me. I'll eventually watch Part 2 of the television show when I'm in the mood for it. Currently, not so much.

3.5* If you’ve ever wanted to understand what the term “unreliable narrator” means, the story of Maya Abramovna Klotsvog, who lives in the USSR after WWII, by Margarita Khemlin is an excellent example. Told like a memoir, this novel translated by Lisa C. Hayden, seems simple but is very different. See what I thought about it in my #bookreview here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2019/08/23/but-that-is-not-my-point/

Tyler knows how to write not just about ordinary people, but ones who are flawed, so that we see their flaws through them far more vividly than the people around them. This short novel focuses on loss and mourning and if there are things we find hard to believe that can become believable in certain circumstances. Wishing all my friends in the US a Happy Thanksgiving! In Ellen Cooney's novel "Thanksgiving," she follows the Morley women over 350 years, using their ancestral home and the food they prepared for their Thanksgiving table as the focal points. This is a totally unique idea that has been very well executed. You can read my full review here https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2013/12/13/one-family-one-holiday-many-generations-of-women/

What would you think about a woman who is so secretive about her past that the only clues to it appear as her tattoos that contain only the first lines of significant novels? This is Loveday Cardew and she works at the Lost for Words Bookshop, the titular store in Stephanie Butland’s latest novel. See what I thought of this book in my review here.
