David McK (3600 KP) rated Sharpe's Eagle (1993) in Movies
Jul 31, 2021 (Updated Jul 31, 2021)
The second of the early-to-mid 90s TV adaptations of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, based on the first published of those novels and starring Sean Bean in the title role.
And, already, the restrictions of a TV budget are beginning to show somewhat: The Battle of Talavera, for instance (which occurs at the end of both the novel and this made-for-TV movie) is a decidedly small-scale affair, for instance!
Still, for all that, this is still an enjoyable enough adaptation of the source material.

The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated The Shipping News in Books
Oct 5, 2020
For those of you who enjoyed my recent review of Annie Proulx’s short story collection that includes the story “Brokeback Mountain,” you might also be interested in seeing my older review of her National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Shipping News.” In that review here, you can read why I thought this book not only deserved that prize, but also why I believe she truly earned the Library of Congress 2018 award for American Literature. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2014/08/09/get-roped-into-this-story/

The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated A Tale for the Time Being in Books
Oct 5, 2020
When I reviewed this book in 2013, I said that if you read only one book that year that this should be the one. In fact, it got the #1 spot on my “best of 2013” list. My admiration for this book has not faded, and I included it in my seven-day book cover challenge here on Facebook recently. You can find out why “A Tale for the Time Being” by Ruth Ozeki is so special from my review here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2014/05/06/a-novel-that-sweeps-in-like-the-tide/

The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated Mistress of the Ritz in Books
Oct 5, 2020
When it comes to the French Resistance of WWII, the names Blanche and Claude Auzello aren’t all that well-known. Thankfully, Melanie Benjamin has just written a biographical, historical fiction novel about them, and especially about Blanche, who during the Nazi occupation of Paris, was known as the “Mistress of the Ritz” and she was the wife of the hotel’s manager, Claude. You can find my review of this amazing book on my blog here (Thanks for the free book, @PRHGlobal/@prhinternational.) https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2019/05/24/puttin-on-the-resistance/
