Oooof, apparently I should have read the synopsis more closely. The writing was good, and I would be willing to try another book by this author.
This book just wasn't my jam, my brain turns off as soon as the story line becomes solely about having kids and sacrificing oneself for family. I can't relate, and I find it completely snooze-worthy.
This rating is so low, because this just wasn't my cup of tea. It only gets a 2 because I liked the writing style. I know it's based on a myth, which is en vogue right now, but why can't strong, childless (by choice) women exist in books? This novel to me was just a growing problem that I'm having with novels in general at this point.

"This slim novel is one of the most intriguing works of literature I have come upon in a long while. Part mystery, part metaphysical journey, part fairy tale, part adult love story, it brought me to a state of the most welcome strangeness, similar to the one I sought out as a young reader of books that challenged how we perceive reality and reconstruct it in text. In the narrative’s mysterious, slow burn of a chase, a woman who has left her husband is tracked down in The Taiga, a territory where the laws of nature are as much out of joint as the rules of its isolated human society. In its uneasy atmosphere there are echoes from Tarkovsky's film Stalker as well as from golden age private eye novels."

When I read Ballard, I tend to be completely engrossed, and creeped out. This novel features a doctor, who goes on the hunt for the source of a river that could make the Sahara a land of plenty. The dude, of course, becomes completely unhinged, as most of the main male characters in Ballard's novels.
The summary on the back of the library copy I read had a phrase to the effect of, is this a fever dream, or did it happen... In my mind, I'd like to hope it was a fever dream because it was completely disturbing (some pedo action).
Still, though I felt like I was reading something akin to a car crash (pun unintended), which has also been explored expertly by Ballard, I couldn't help but continue reading until the end.

Claudia Gray is by far, one of the best authors that Disney hired to write new canon Star Wars novels. I love Gray's characterization of Leia, and I've been waiting for a Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan novel for ages.
We see the beginning of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship, and the conflict within it. In this novel, it was revealed that Qui-Gon WAS offered a position of Jedi Master. Qui-Gon doesn't accept right away, because it would mean that he couldn't have a padawan. They both go on what is thought to be their last mission together.
Obviously, you know how it shakes out, because Obi-Wan is Qui-Gon's padawan in Phantom Menace, but it's still an interesting and deeper look into both characters.
