Lost the plot
Yet another trashy netflix film that has just been churned out for the new content aspect. The script was obvious and stupid - within the first few minutes the main character talking to herself.

The main character is obnoxious, bratty and has one thing on her mind that revolves entirely around her. The premise is false and faked. Also, how many times do you want to use the roof broke/fell in as a plot change.

Character development is very limited, there seems to be a back story but it is never actually mentioned. The actual outcome of the competition is never shown.


Some of the young actors are very talented and I can see them having bright futures. I like the added layer with the deaf child.

There is a token black actor...... who is unsurprisingly the only outwardly camp/gay person.

Also Welly Wang?! Really?!

I suspect I am not the target audience but if I had tweens I probably wouldn't want them watching this drivel.

Rather uneven comedy melodrama from very early in Pedro Almodovar's career. A cabaret singer hides out in a convent; the Mother Superior has a heroin habit, the nuns have names like Sister Manure and Sister Sewer Rat, one of them writes schlocky bestsellers on the quiet and another keeps a pet tiger in the convent gardens.

Apparently intended as a critique of the anachronism of organised religion in modern Spain, and to begin with the film's various provocations are diverting and amusing, but the jokes dry up after a while and any serious points the film is making get lost in all the silliness. The fact the main character is played by a non-actress does not help. The plot is the kind of mixture of deep emotion and absurd contrivance that Almodovar has built a career on, but at this point he was yet to master making you invest in it and care about the characters. Kind of diverting and interestingly weird in places, but clearly the work of a director still paying his dues.

The film reminded me a lot of the Mexican Leap Year, despite being a more pop version, as its Latin counterpart is rawer, denser and sadder. It doesn't mean that this film doesn't have its moments of rawness, density and sadness, but it is aesthetically more beautiful, it has a certain American film standard. The scenes of Juha trying to hold on to his wife's memories are very sad. The actors make the movie work, the duo, as strange as it may seem, managed to forge a nice chemistry. There is a lot that was left open and that could be better worked on in countless points, Juha's relationship with her daughter is just one of them. The ending left me with mixed feelings, but I got into the mood. The film only gets lost when it tries to emulate some points of Hollywood cinema, otherwise it made a good film. Krista Kosonen steals the scenes in which she appears, an actress who deserves much more than being an extra in Blade Runner.
